Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zuburan (زُبُرًا): The plural of *zubur*, meaning sects, factions, or divided groups. It refers to the way people split into separate parties, each with its own book or doctrine.
- Hizb (حِزْب): A party, faction, or group that follows a particular opinion or ideology.
- Farihoon (فَرِحُونَ): Rejoicing, exultant, or delighted—being pleased and content with what one holds.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the messengers delivered the message of pure monotheism—calling humanity to worship Allah alone and follow His straight path—the followers of those prophets did not remain united. Instead, they split apart and fragmented their religion into numerous sects and parties. They turned the one divine religion into many different creeds, each group claiming to possess the true faith while rejecting others. This division was not based on divine guidance but on personal opinions, innovations, and worldly desires.
Every faction became infatuated with its own views, rejoicing in what it had, convinced that it alone was upon the truth and that everyone else was misguided. They took pride in their innovations and felt secure in their distorted beliefs, unaware that their fragmentation was a departure from the unity that Allah had commanded.
This verse serves as a profound warning to the Muslim Ummah: division and partisanship in religion are destructive paths that lead away from Allah’s mercy. The Qur’an repeatedly calls believers to hold fast to the rope of Allah and not to be divided. When people prioritize their own group loyalties over the core principles of faith—such as justice, mercy, and submission to Allah—they weaken their own cause and lose the strength that comes from unity.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this powerful lesson: the enemies of truth have always tried to divide the believers, but Allah has honored this Ummah with a complete, preserved revelation—the Qur’an—and a clear methodology. Let us not repeat the mistakes of those before us by turning our religion into a battleground of sects. Instead, let us unite upon the fundamentals of faith: belief in Allah, His messengers, His books, the Last Day, and the divine decree. When we focus on what unites us—love for Allah, following the Prophet ﷺ, and good character—we become a mercy to humanity. Be among those who rejoice in the truth of Islam, not in the opinions of men. Hold fast to the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next. Allah says: “Indeed, this religion of yours is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me” (Qur’an 21:92). Let unity be your shield and sincerity your guide.
