Key Words and Meanings:

  • فَلَا تُطِعِ الْكَافِرِينَ (So do not obey the disbelievers): Do not yield to their demands or follow their suggestions.
  • وَجَاهِدْهُم (and strive against them): Exert your utmost effort in opposing them.
  • بِهِ (with it): With this Qur'an — the divine revelation itself.
  • جِهَادًا كَبِيرًا (a great striving): A mighty, relentless struggle, free from any weakness or hesitation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse carries a direct and powerful command from Allah to His Messenger (peace be upon him), and by extension, to every believer who carries the message of truth. Allah instructs His Prophet not to obey the disbelievers in any of their demands — whether they ask him to compromise his faith, to soften his stance toward their false gods, or to abandon any part of what was revealed to him. Their proposals were not merely suggestions; they were attempts to dilute the pure message of monotheism and to pull the Prophet away from his sacred mission.

Then comes the second part of the command: "And strive against them with it — a great striving." The pronoun "it" refers to the Qur'an. This is a profound and beautiful directive: the weapon of the believer in this struggle is not the sword of aggression, but the Word of Allah. The Qur'an is the tool of persuasion, the source of guidance, the proof that silences falsehood, and the light that penetrates the darkness of ignorance. The Prophet was commanded to wage this struggle through the Qur'an — by reciting it, explaining it, living by it, and calling others to it — with patience, perseverance, and unwavering resolve.

This "great striving" is described as *kabīr* (great) because it is not a one-time effort or a fleeting enthusiasm. It is a continuous, lifelong commitment that requires enduring harm, facing rejection, and remaining steadfast in the face of trials. It is a struggle that combines the heart, the tongue, and the actions — a struggle against falsehood in all its forms, carried out with wisdom and beautiful preaching, yet without any compromise on the core principles of faith.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is not merely historical — it is a living instruction for you today. In a world filled with pressures to conform, with voices calling you to dilute your faith, to abandon your principles for worldly gain, or to remain silent in the face of falsehood, this verse stands as your anchor. Do not obey those who reject Allah, no matter how powerful, numerous, or persuasive they may seem. Their path leads only to loss, while the path of Allah leads to eternal success.

And your weapon in this struggle is the Qur'an. It is your light, your guide, and your proof. Strive with it — in your own life first, by implementing its teachings and embodying its values. Then strive with it in your family, your community, and your society. Call to Allah with it, defend the truth with it, and let it be the standard by which you judge all matters.

This is the *jihad* that never ends — a struggle of patience, knowledge, and action. It may not involve swords or battles, but it is no less significant. Indeed, it is the greatest of strivings because it targets the hearts and minds of people, aiming to bring them from darkness into light.

So take heart, O believer. Your mission is noble, your weapon is divine, and your reward is with Allah. Do not weaken, do not despair, and do not yield. Strive with the Qur'an — a great striving — and trust that Allah is with those who strive in His cause.

📜 Verse 50-54 — Al-Furqan

And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.
And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.
So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur'an a great striving.
And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].
