Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse establishes the unique status of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his household within the Muslim community, while also laying down the foundational principles of inheritance and social bonds.
First, Allah declares that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is *awlā* — more deserving and having a greater claim over the believers than their own selves. This means that whatever the Prophet commands, judges, or chooses for a believer takes precedence over one's personal desires, opinions, or even self-interest. His judgment is the final word in all matters of religion and worldly affairs. A true believer must submit fully to his guidance, love him more than oneself, one's family, and all of humanity — for his love is a condition of complete faith. This is not merely an emotional attachment but a practical submission: when the Prophet commands something, the believer obeys without hesitation; when he forbids something, the believer abstains without reservation.
Second, Allah states that the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are *mothers of the believers*. This is a title of immense honor and sanctity. It means that they are forbidden in marriage to any Muslim after the Prophet's death, just as one's own mother is forbidden. They are to be treated with the utmost respect, reverence, and dignity. However, this "motherhood" is spiritual and legal in nature — it does not permit looking at them or being alone with them, as they remain non-mahram (unrelated) in terms of physical interaction. The believers must honor them, defend their honor, and recognize their elevated status as the wives of the Final Messenger.
Third, the verse addresses the system of inheritance and mutual rights among believers. In the early days of Islam, Muslims in Madinah would inherit from one another based on brotherhood established through faith and migration (the bond of *mu'ākhāt* between the Muhājirūn and Anṣār), even if they were not blood relatives. This was a temporary measure to support the migrants who had left everything behind for the sake of Allah. However, this verse establishes the permanent rule: blood relatives (*ulū al-Arhām*) have a greater right to inherit from one another according to Allah's decree. This is the divine law written in the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ) from eternity. The earlier practice of inheritance through faith and migration was abrogated, and inheritance now follows the clear rules of kinship as detailed in the Qur'an.
Yet, the verse adds a beautiful exception: although inheritance is restricted to blood relatives, believers are still encouraged to do good to their non-inheriting allies and friends. They may make bequests (up to one-third of the estate) to those who are not legal heirs, and they may show kindness, support, and goodwill to their allies and companions. This preserves the spirit of brotherhood and gratitude without violating the divine system of inheritance.
This verse was inscribed in the Preserved Tablet — meaning it is part of Allah's eternal decree, and it is obligatory upon the believers to implement it with full submission and sincerity.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, ponder the greatness of this verse! It teaches us that our love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not a mere slogan but a living reality that shapes our choices, our priorities, and our obedience. When you place his guidance above your own desires, you are not losing your freedom — you are gaining true liberation from the whims of the self and the pressures of society. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is the one who loves you more than your own self does, for he guided you to the path of eternal success.
And what an honor it is to be part of a community whose mothers are the pure wives of the Messenger! This elevates the dignity of every believer and reminds us of the sanctity of our Prophet's household.
Moreover, this verse beautifully balances the rights of kinship with the bonds of faith. While inheritance follows blood ties, kindness and generosity extend to all. Islam is a religion of justice and mercy — it gives everyone their due rights while encouraging us to go beyond in goodness.
Let this verse inspire you to deepen your love for the Prophet (peace be upon him), to honor his family, to uphold the rights of your relatives, and to be generous to those around you. For indeed, this is the path of true success in this life and the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who truly love the Prophet and follow him in every matter.
