Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Mīthāq (ميثاق): A solemn, binding covenant or pledge.
- Ghalīẓ (غليظ): Strong, firm, severe, and weighty — a covenant of immense gravity and obligation.
- Ūlū al-ʿAzm (أولو العزم): The prophets of firm resolve and determination, who endured the greatest hardships in conveying the message of Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, remember and reflect upon the time when Allah took a profound and solemn covenant from all the prophets — a pledge to worship Him alone, to convey His divine message to humanity without alteration, and to affirm and support one another in truth. This covenant was not light or trivial; it was weighty, binding, and of immense consequence.
Among all the prophets, Allah specifically singled out five — you, O Muhammad, and Nūḥ (Noah), Ibrāhīm (Abraham), Mūsā (Moses), and ʿĪsā ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary) — and these are the prophets of firm resolve (Ūlū al-ʿAzm), who carried the greatest burdens and faced the fiercest opposition in establishing the religion of Allah upon the earth. They are the pillars of the divine message, the roots of the great laws, and the leaders of all messengers who came after them.
This covenant was taken from them at the very beginning of their prophetic mission, and some scholars mention it was also taken from them when they were extracted from the loins of Adam as seeds, acknowledging Allah's lordship. The covenant included: sincere worship of Allah alone with no partner, faithful delivery of every revelation entrusted to them, mutual belief in one another, and unwavering steadfastness in the face of hardship.
The mention of these five specifically — despite the covenant being taken from all prophets — highlights their extraordinary rank and the magnitude of their responsibility. They were chosen to establish the foundational principles of faith that would be perfected and completed with the final message brought by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this divine trust! If the mightiest prophets of Allah — those of firm resolve — were bound by such a solemn covenant to convey the truth, then what is our responsibility as believers who claim to follow them? The covenant was not merely a historical event; it is a living reality that calls us to uphold the same principles: sincere worship of Allah alone, truthful conveyance of what we know, and mutual support among the believers.
Let this verse awaken in your heart a sense of honor — that you belong to a faith whose foundation was laid by the greatest of Allah's creation. And let it also awaken a sense of duty — to carry the light of this message with sincerity, patience, and unwavering commitment, just as those noble prophets did. Their covenant was "ghalīẓ" — firm and weighty — because the task was great and the reward is even greater. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, and He is with those who strive in His cause.
So, stand firm upon this covenant, renew your intention every morning, and be among those who honor their pledge with Allah — for indeed, Allah never breaks His promise to those who are true.
