Word Meanings:

  • Al-Munafiqun: The hypocrites – those who conceal disbelief in their hearts while outwardly displaying faith.
  • Alladhina fi qulubihim marad: Those in whose hearts is a disease – referring to moral corruption, particularly inclinations toward immorality and sin.
  • Al-Murjifun: Those who spread alarming rumors and false news – literally, those who circulate unsettling reports to destabilize the community.
  • Lanughriyannaka bihim: We will surely incite you against them – meaning, We will give you power and authority over them.
  • La yujawirunaka: They will not remain as your neighbors – meaning, they will not dwell alongside you.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse carries a decisive warning from Allah to three distinct groups that were causing harm to the Muslim community in Madinah during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

  1. The Hypocrites – those who outwardly professed Islam but inwardly harbored disbelief and worked against the interests of the believers.
  2. Those with diseased hearts – individuals whose moral compass had been corrupted, particularly those inclined toward lewd behavior and immorality.
  3. The Rumor-Mongers – those who spread false and alarming reports about the Muslim armies, claiming they had been defeated or killed, in order to instill fear and weaken the morale of the believers.

Allah issues a stern ultimatum: if these groups do not cease their harmful behavior, He will give the Prophet (peace be upon him) authority and power over them. The consequence would be severe – they would be expelled from Madinah entirely, and would only remain as neighbors for a very short time before being driven out, captured, or eliminated.

The verse concludes with a powerful statement about their fate: they would be cursed wherever they are found, seized and killed mercilessly. This punishment would continue as long as they persisted in their hypocrisy and their campaign of spreading false news to create discord and corruption among the believers.

Reflection and Da'wah:

This verse demonstrates Allah's absolute protection of His Messenger and the Muslim community. It reassures believers that no matter how much the enemies of Islam – whether hypocrites, morally corrupt individuals, or rumor-mongers – try to destabilize the community, Allah is fully aware of their schemes and has promised to deal with them decisively.

For us today, this verse carries timeless lessons:

  • Sincerity matters: Hypocrisy is a grave sin that Allah detests. We must strive to align our inner convictions with our outward actions, ensuring that our faith is genuine and not merely for show.
  • Guarding our tongues: Spreading rumors and false information is a serious offense in Islam. In our age of social media and instant communication, this warning is more relevant than ever. We must verify news before sharing it and avoid contributing to fear-mongering or division within the community.
  • Trust in Allah's justice: When we see wrongdoers seemingly prospering, we should remember that Allah's justice is inevitable. He may delay punishment, but He never forgets. The fate of those who oppose truth and spread corruption is sealed in His divine plan.
  • The strength of community: The Prophet's community in Madinah was protected because they remained united and vigilant against internal threats. We too must be aware of those who seek to divide us and weaken our resolve, and we must stand firm in our faith and brotherhood.

This verse is a powerful reminder that Allah is the ultimate protector of His believers. When we face trials and see those who spread falsehood, we should remain patient and steadfast, knowing that Allah's promise of victory for the truth is certain. The Qur'an is not merely a book of stories – it is a living guide that addresses the realities of every era, including ours. Let us take heed and strive to be among those who are sincere, truthful, and committed to the unity and well-being of the Muslim community.

📜 Verse 58-62 — Al-Ahzab

And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in al-Madinah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little.
Accursed wherever they are found, [being] seized and massacred completely.
[This is] the established way of Allah with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allah any change.
