Key Words and Meanings:
- Jalabib (جَلَابِيب): The plural of *jilbab*, which refers to a loose outer garment or cloak that covers the entire body, worn over the inner clothing and head covering.
- Yudnina (يُدْنِينَ): To draw close, lower, or let down the garment so that it covers properly.
- Adna (أَدْنَى): Closer or more appropriate for achieving a certain outcome.
- Yu'dhayn (يُؤْذَيْنَ): To be harmed, harassed, or subjected to ill treatment.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, Allah commands you to address your wives, your daughters, and the believing women, instructing them to draw their outer garments (jalabib) closely over themselves, covering their heads, faces, and bodies when they go out in public. This instruction is not merely a cultural tradition but a divine directive aimed at protecting women's dignity and honour. By wearing the jilbab properly, a woman is clearly identified as a chaste, free, and respectable Muslim woman, and this identification serves as a shield against any form of harassment or unwanted attention from those with ill intentions. The verse beautifully states that this practice is the most appropriate means for women to be recognised for their modesty and virtue, so that they are not harmed or troubled.
The verse concludes with a profound reminder of Allah's attributes: He is Ever-Forgiving and Most Merciful. This closing reassures the believers that any shortcomings in the past, before this guidance was revealed, are forgiven upon sincere repentance, and that Allah's mercy encompasses His servants in all their affairs. It is a gentle and compassionate call to obedience, not a burden, but a blessing that elevates the status of women and protects their dignity in society.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a timeless message of honour and protection for women in Islam. It is not about restriction but about liberation—liberation from being judged by appearance or treated as objects of casual gaze. The hijab and jilbab are badges of identity, declaring: "I am a woman of faith, dignity, and self-respect." When a woman adheres to this divine command, she sends a clear message to the world that her worth is not in her physical beauty but in her intellect, character, and devotion to her Creator.
Dear reader, reflect on the wisdom of this command: it creates a safe environment where women are respected for who they are, not what they look like. It strengthens the fabric of society by fostering mutual respect between men and women. And if you have not yet embraced this beautiful practice, know that Allah's mercy is vast—He forgives the past and welcomes you with open arms when you turn to Him. Let this verse inspire you to see the hijab not as a limitation, but as a crown of honour and a key to true peace and contentment in this life and the next.
