Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zulfā (زُلْفَى): Nearness, closeness, and a high rank of honor.
- Ḥusn Ma’āb (حُسْن مَآب): A beautiful and excellent final return or destination.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a direct response to Prophet Dāwūd (David, peace be upon him) after his heartfelt repentance and humble plea for forgiveness. Allah, in His infinite mercy and generosity, says: "So We forgave him that." This refers to the slip or error that occurred when Dāwūd rushed to judge a dispute without hearing both sides fully—a moment of human oversight, not a major sin, as prophets are protected from major sins. Allah, the Most Forgiving, wiped it away completely, showing that sincere repentance erases mistakes entirely.
Then Allah adds a magnificent promise: "And indeed, for him with Us is a nearness [of rank] and a good final return." This means that not only was Dāwūd forgiven, but he was elevated to an even higher status of closeness to Allah. He was granted a distinguished position in the Hereafter—a place of honor, paradise, and eternal bliss. This teaches us a profound lesson: when a person turns back to Allah sincerely, Allah does not merely erase the sin; He replaces it with elevation, honor, and increased love. The very act of repentance can become a means of drawing closer to Allah than ever before.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, look at the beauty of Allah’s way with His servants! When you stumble and fall, do not despair. Allah is not a harsh master waiting to punish; He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. He loves when His servant returns to Him, and He transforms that return into a ladder of honor. If a mighty prophet like Dāwūd—a man of great power, wisdom, and devotion—needed to repent and was forgiven and elevated, then what about us? Our Lord’s door of forgiveness is wide open, day and night. He says in another verse: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So rush to Him with a sincere heart, seek His forgiveness, and watch how He turns your weakness into strength, your distance into nearness, and your end into a beautiful one. This is the promise of the One who never breaks His word.
