Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Amānāt (الأمانات): Everything entrusted to a person for safekeeping, whether material possessions, secrets, positions of authority, or religious duties.
  • Ahlahā (أهلها): Those who are rightfully entitled to them — their rightful owners or those best qualified to carry them.
  • Taḥkumū bil-ʿAdl (تحكموا بالعدل): To judge with fairness and equity, without bias, favoritism, or injustice.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most High, issues a profound and comprehensive command that forms the bedrock of a just and righteous society. He orders you, O believers, to return all trusts to their rightful owners. This is not limited to material wealth or belongings that people leave with you for safekeeping; rather, it encompasses every form of trust — including secrets shared in confidence, positions of leadership and authority, professional responsibilities, and even the sacred trusts of worship and religious obligations. Each of these must be fulfilled faithfully and delivered to those who deserve them, without negligence, betrayal, or delay.

The verse then addresses the matter of judgment and governance: when you are entrusted with the responsibility of judging between people — whether as a ruler, a judge, an arbitrator, or even a parent resolving a dispute between children — you must judge with absolute justice and equity. Justice here means ruling according to what is right and true, without being swayed by personal feelings, family ties, wealth, status, or any other worldly consideration. The command is unconditional: justice must be upheld whether the parties involved are friends or foes, Muslims or non-Muslims, rich or poor.

Allah then praises His own guidance, saying that excellent indeed is the counsel He gives you. This is a gentle yet powerful encouragement, reminding us that these divine instructions are not burdensome restrictions but rather the very path to harmony, trust, and prosperity in both this life and the Hereafter. When trusts are honored and justice prevails, societies flourish; when they are betrayed, corruption and chaos spread.

The verse concludes with a profound reminder of Allah's attributes: He is All-Hearing (Samīʿ) and All-Seeing (Baṣīr). He hears every word you utter — including the promises you make and the judgments you pronounce — and He sees every action you take, whether open or hidden. Nothing escapes His knowledge. This serves as both a warning and a source of comfort: a warning for those who might be tempted to betray a trust or pervert justice, and a comfort for those who strive to be upright, for their sincerity is known to Allah, and their reward is guaranteed.

This verse beautifully illustrates the holistic nature of Islam — that faith is not merely a matter of ritual worship, but a complete way of life that demands integrity in dealings, fairness in judgments, and accountability to the Creator at every moment. By following this divine guidance, you align yourself with the very purpose of your creation and earn the pleasure of your Lord, who watches over all that you do with perfect hearing and sight.

📜 Verse 56-60 — An-Nisa

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.
But those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide forever. For them therein are purified spouses, and We will admit them to deepening shade.
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.
