Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ūlī al-Amr (أُولِي الْأَمْرِ): Those in authority among you — the rulers, leaders, and those entrusted with managing the affairs of the Muslim community.
- Tanāza'tum (تَنَازَعْتُمْ): You dispute or disagree with one another over any matter.
- Ruddūhu (رُدُّوهُ): Refer it back — meaning, return the matter to its proper source of judgment.
- Ta'wīl (تَأْوِيلًا): The ultimate outcome, consequence, or interpretation that leads to the best end.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger — hear this call from your Lord! Obey Allah by submitting to His commands and abstaining from what He has forbidden. And obey the Messenger (peace be upon him) by following the guidance he brought, for he does not speak from his own desire — it is nothing but revelation revealed to him. And obey those in authority among you — your leaders, rulers, and scholars — as long as they command what is in accordance with Allah's law. However, their obedience is conditional: if they command you to disobey Allah, then there is no obedience to any creation in disobedience to the Creator.
Then comes a profound principle that safeguards the unity of the Muslim community: if you dispute over anything — whether in matters of religion or worldly affairs — do not rely on personal opinions, blind following, or the whims of individuals. Instead, refer the matter back to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him). During his lifetime, this meant going directly to him; after his death, it means returning to his authentic traditions and the understanding of the righteous predecessors.
This command is a test of your faith: if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day, you will accept this divine arbitration with full submission. The verse emphasizes that this return to the divine sources is not merely an obligation — it is what is best for you. It is better than persisting in conflict, better than relying on flawed human reasoning, and it leads to the most beautiful outcome in this life and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, see how your Lord cares for your unity and peace! He did not leave you to wander in confusion when disagreements arise. He gave you a clear, unshakeable reference point — His Book and His Messenger's guidance — so that your hearts may find rest and your affairs may be set straight. This is the path of honor and success. When you refer your disputes to Allah and His Messenger, you are not losing anything; rather, you are gaining the most excellent result and the most beautiful end. So hold fast to this divine command, and you will find harmony in your community, tranquility in your heart, and Allah's pleasure in your life. This is the way of those who truly love Allah and seek His reward — and what a wonderful way it is!
