Word Meanings:

  • Fāsiq (فَاسِقٌ): A person who openly commits sins and violates the commands of Allah, whose testimony and reports are not trustworthy.
  • Naba’ (نَبَإٍ): News or information, especially of significant importance.
  • Fatabayyanū (فَتَبَيَّنُوا): Verify, investigate, and seek clarity before acting or believing.
  • Jahālah (بِجَهَالَةٍ): In ignorance, without knowing the true reality of the matter.
  • Nādimīn (نَادِمِينَ): Those filled with deep regret and sorrow over an action they have taken.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have sincerely believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to follow His guidance! When a sinful person—one whose word is not reliable—brings you important news, do not rush to accept it or act upon it. Instead, pause, investigate, and verify the truth of what you have heard before believing it or passing it on.

Why? Because acting on unverified reports can lead you to harm innocent people—striking them with accusations, judgments, or actions based on falsehood. You would be doing so in ignorance, unaware of their true condition or the reality of the situation. And when the truth eventually becomes clear, and you realize that you wronged those innocent souls, you will be left drowning in regret—regret that comes too late to undo the damage.

This verse is a timeless principle of justice and social responsibility. It protects the honor, safety, and rights of individuals and communities. It teaches us that a single careless word or a hasty decision can destroy lives, break families, and tear apart societies. Islam, in its profound wisdom, commands us to be people of verification, not assumption; people of patience, not haste.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, how many conflicts, broken relationships, and injustices in our world today stem from rumors, unverified news, and the words of those who do not fear Allah? This noble verse is a divine shield for your heart and your community. When you receive news—whether about a person, a group, or an event—make verification your habit. Do not let a fāsiq’s words move you to anger, judgment, or action.

The Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a guide to a life of wisdom, mercy, and justice. By following this command, you protect yourself from the torment of regret and you safeguard the dignity of others. Imagine the peace that fills a society where people do not act on suspicion, where truth is sought before accusations are made, and where hearts are free from the poison of false news. That is the society Islam builds—one of trust, fairness, and compassion.

So, O believer, make this verse your compass in every report you hear. Be a person of tabayyun (verification), and you will be among those who bring justice to the earth and earn the love of Allah, who Himself is the All-Seeing, All-Knowing. Let your actions today be free from haste, so that your tomorrow is free from sorrow.

📜 Verse 4-8 — Al-Hujurat

Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.
And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.
[It is] as bounty from Allah and favor. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
