Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Sabaru" (صبروا): To wait patiently, to restrain oneself, and to exercise self-control.
  • "Takhruja ilayhim" (تخرج إليهم): That you (O Prophet) come out to them.
  • "Khayran lahum" (خيرًا لهم): Better for them — in this life and the Hereafter.
  • "Ghafoorun Raheem" (غفور رحيم): Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful — two of Allah’s beautiful names emphasizing His forgiveness and compassion.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues to address a group of Bedouin Arabs who had come to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and, out of ignorance and lack of proper manners, called out to him from outside his private chambers — the rooms of his wives — with loud voices, without waiting for him to come out to them. Allah, the Most High, gently corrects their behavior and teaches them — and through them, all believers — the proper etiquette of dealing with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

Allah says: *"And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them."* This means: if they had waited calmly and patiently, without rushing or raising their voices, and had allowed the Prophet to come out to them at his own convenience, then they would have spoken to him with respect and dignity. That would have been far better for them — both in terms of worldly manners and in terms of their reward with Allah — because it demonstrates reverence for the Prophet, which is a sign of faith and good character.

The verse then concludes with the beautiful words: *"And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."* This is a gentle reminder that despite their mistake, Allah did not punish them immediately. Instead, He taught them with kindness and mercy, forgiving their error which arose from ignorance rather than deliberate disrespect. This shows us the immense mercy of Allah — He does not hasten to punish His servants for their shortcomings, especially when they are unaware, and He is always ready to forgive those who repent and correct their ways.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear brothers and sisters in faith, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of us. It teaches us the importance of patience, respect, and proper manners — not only with the Prophet (peace be upon him), but also with our parents, our scholars, our leaders, and one another. In our daily lives, how often do we rush into matters without waiting for the right time? How often do we speak without thinking, or act without proper etiquette?

Islam is a religion of beautiful character. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: *"I was sent only to perfect noble character."* This verse is a living example of how Allah Himself trains His believers in good manners. If we learn to be patient, to wait for the appropriate moment, and to speak with gentleness and respect, we will find peace in our hearts and harmony in our communities.

Moreover, the verse ends with hope — *"Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."* No matter how many times we fall short, no matter how many mistakes we make out of ignorance or haste, the door of Allah’s forgiveness is always open. He does not turn away those who turn to Him in repentance. So let us not despair of His mercy, but rather strive to improve ourselves, day by day, step by step, seeking His pleasure and His love.

May Allah grant us the ability to embody patience and respect in all our dealings, and may He forgive us our shortcomings, for He is indeed the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Al-Hujurat

Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.
And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.
