Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-sjudū (فاسجدوا): Prostrate yourselves in humble submission and obedience.
- Lillāh (لله): To Allah alone, exclusively and sincerely.
- Wa‘budū (واعبدوا): And worship Him with full devotion, sincerity, and complete submission.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This concluding verse of Surah An-Najm is a direct and powerful call to all who hear the Qur’an, especially those who mock or turn away from it. After the previous verses rebuked the disbelievers for their astonishment, laughter, and heedlessness toward the divine message, Allah commands them—and all of humanity—to abandon arrogance and submit to their Creator.
The command "Prostrate to Allah" refers to the act of sujūd, the ultimate physical expression of humility before the Almighty. It is a prostration of recitation (sajdat al-tilāwah) when this verse is recited, signifying the believer’s immediate and heartfelt response to Allah’s call. Some scholars also interpret it as a command to perform the obligatory prayers, which are the foundation of worship and the pillar of Islam.
The second part, "and worship Him," emphasizes that all forms of worship—prayer, supplication, sacrifice, love, hope, and fear—must be directed to Allah alone, with no partner or associate. This is the essence of tawḥīd (monotheism): to purify one’s intention and devotion entirely for Allah, submitting all affairs to His will.
This verse is a beautiful invitation, not a burden. It reminds us that the path to peace and success lies in humbling ourselves before the One who created us, sustains us, and knows what is best for us. When we prostrate to Allah, we free ourselves from the chains of pride and self-importance. We acknowledge that we are servants of the Most Merciful, and in that servitude, we find true honor and tranquility.
Dear reader, this call is for you today, just as it was for the first listeners. Do not let your heart be distracted by the fleeting pleasures of this world or the whispers of arrogance. Answer the call of your Lord with a sincere prostration and a devoted heart. Let your life be a living worship of Allah—in your words, your actions, and your intentions. For indeed, the one who submits to Allah has grasped the firmest handhold that never breaks, and Allah is with those who humble themselves before Him, guiding them to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
