Word Meanings:
- Sāmidūn (سَامِدُونَ): This word carries the meaning of being heedless, negligent, and turning away in indifference. It also implies a state of being preoccupied with worldly matters, such that one is unmoved by serious warnings or profound truths.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the disbelievers of Makkah who, upon hearing the Qur’an, reacted with mockery and laughter instead of reflection and humility. Allah rebukes them, saying: "And you are sāmidūn" — meaning, you are heedless and negligent, turning away from the Qur’an with arrogance and indifference. You do not take it seriously, nor do you pause to consider its truths. Instead, you busy yourselves with amusement and vanity, as if the warnings of the Hereafter and the signs of Allah’s power mean nothing to you.
The verse comes in a sequence of rhetorical questions posed by Allah to the disbelievers: "Do you then wonder at this statement (the Qur’an)? And you laugh and do not weep, while you are proudly heedless?" (An-Najm 53:59–61). This verse highlights their attitude of arrogance and disregard. They were so engrossed in their worldly pleasures and tribal pride that the Qur’an’s call to monotheism and accountability fell on deaf ears. Their laughter and mockery were not signs of strength, but of deep spiritual blindness.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: How often do we, too, become sāmidūn — heedless and distracted — when the Qur’an is recited? We may hear its verses, yet our hearts remain unmoved, our minds elsewhere. The Qur’an is not a book to be taken lightly; it is a divine message that calls us to the most noble purpose: to know our Creator, to worship Him alone, and to prepare for the Day we will all return to Him.
This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder to wake up from our negligence. It invites us to replace mockery with reverence, heedlessness with reflection, and pride with humility. When you hear the Qur’an, let your heart soften, let your eyes shed tears of awe and gratitude, and let your limbs submit in prostration to Allah. For in that submission lies true peace, success, and salvation. Allah says in the following verse (An-Najm 53:62): "So prostrate to Allah and worship Him alone." This is the ultimate call — to abandon all false gods and turn sincerely to the One who created you, sustains you, and will judge you with perfect justice.
Embrace this message today. Let not your heart be among the sāmidūn, but rather among those who listen attentively, believe sincerely, and act righteously. The Qur’an is your guide to eternal happiness — do not let heedlessness rob you of its treasures.
