📖 English Meaning
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Yubayi'nak (يُبَايِعْنَك): They give you their pledge of allegiance — a solemn covenant of obedience and loyalty.
  • La yushrikna (لَا يُشْرِكْنَ): They do not associate partners with Allah in worship.
  • Yasriqna (يَسْرِقْنَ): They steal.
  • Yazina (يَزْنِينَ): They commit adultery or fornication.
  • Yaqtulna awladahunna (يَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ): They kill their children — a reference to the pre-Islamic practice of female infanticide (wa'd), burying baby girls alive out of fear of poverty or shame.
  • Buhutan yaftarinahu (بُهْتَانٍ يَفْتَرِينَهُ): A false accusation they fabricate — specifically, attributing a child to their husband that is not from him, or slandering another's chastity.
  • Bayna aydihinna wa arjulihinna (بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِنَّ وَأَرْجُلِهِنَّ): Literally "between their hands and their feet" — an idiom meaning the child that falls from their womb at birth, or the slander that comes from their own words and actions.
  • Ma'ruf (مَعْرُوفٍ): What is recognized as good and right — every command that aligns with Allah's law and the Prophet's ﷺ guidance.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, when believing women come to you — as they did on the day of the Conquest of Makkah — offering their pledge of allegiance, you are to accept their covenant upon these sacred conditions:

First, they pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah — no idol, no saint, no worldly desire placed above His command. Their worship is for Him alone, pure and untainted.

Second, they pledge not to steal — not even a small amount, for honesty is the foundation of trust in any society.

Third, they pledge not to commit adultery or fornication — protecting their honor, their families, and the lineage of the community.

Fourth, they pledge not to kill their children — a direct prohibition of the pre-Islamic practice of burying newborn girls alive, and by extension, any harm to children whether before or after birth. Islam came to protect life, especially the most vulnerable.

Fifth, they pledge not to fabricate false accusations — specifically, they will not bring a child and falsely claim it is from their husband when it is not, nor will they slander others. This is called "buh tan" — a monstrous lie that destroys reputations and tears families apart. The phrase "between their hands and their feet" refers to the child that falls from the womb, or the lie that comes from their own mouths and actions.

Sixth, they pledge not to disobey you in what is recognized as good — meaning they will follow the Prophet's ﷺ commands in all matters that align with Allah's law, such as refraining from wailing over the dead, tearing garments, or shaving heads in grief — practices of ignorance that Islam abolished.

When they commit to all this, O Prophet, accept their pledge and pray to Allah for their forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Ever-Forgiving to those who repent sincerely, and Most Merciful to His believing servants.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful testament to the dignity Islam grants women. Fourteen centuries ago, when women were often treated as property, the Qur'an addressed them directly as individuals capable of making solemn covenants with their Creator and His Messenger. Their pledge was not taken lightly — it was a contract of honor, faith, and moral responsibility.

Notice how the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to accept their pledge and then to seek forgiveness for them. This shows the mercy of Allah — He does not demand perfection from His servants, but rather sincere repentance and a commitment to change. The door of forgiveness is always open, and His mercy embraces those who turn back to Him.

Today, every Muslim woman who upholds these principles — in her worship, her honesty, her chastity, her care for children, her truthfulness, and her obedience to Allah's commands — is continuing this noble legacy. She is not merely following rules; she is fulfilling a sacred covenant that elevates her soul and protects her society.

And for those who have fallen short in the past, know that Allah's forgiveness is greater than your sins. As this verse commands the Prophet to pray for the women's forgiveness, so too should every believer never despair of Allah's mercy. Return to Him, renew your covenant, and He will welcome you with open arms — for He is indeed Ghafoor (Oft-Forgiving) and Raheem (Most Merciful).

📜 Verse 10-13 — Al-Mumtahanah

O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the inhabitants of the graves.
