Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Do not take as allies, friends, or protectors.
A people upon whom Allah has sent His wrath due to their disbelief and enmity.
They have despaired of any share or good in the Hereafter.
Just as the disbelievers have despaired of the dead (in the graves) ever returning to life, because they deny the resurrection.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance! Do not take as your intimate allies, supporters, or confidants those upon whom Allah has poured His wrath—the disbelievers and the people of the Book who rejected the truth. They have utterly despaired of any goodness, reward, or salvation in the Hereafter, just as the disbelievers have despaired of the dead in their graves ever coming back to life. For just as those who deny the resurrection see no possibility of the buried returning, these people see no possibility of ever attaining any share of the Hereafter’s bliss—because their hearts are sealed with disbelief, and they have no faith in what Allah has promised His righteous servants.

This verse was revealed in a context where some poor Muslims were inclined to befriend the Jews, hoping to gain some worldly benefit from their wealth and produce. Allah, in His infinite mercy and protective care, warned them—and all believers until the Day of Judgment—against such alliances. The reason is clear: those who have earned Allah’s anger cannot be trusted as allies, for their hearts are void of faith in the Hereafter, and their actions are driven only by worldly desires. Befriending them can only weaken your faith, compromise your principles, and pull you away from the straight path.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is a loving warning from your Lord, Who knows what is in your heart and what is best for your life in this world and the next. Allah is not merely prohibiting a relationship—He is protecting you from harm, guarding your faith, and preserving your honor. When you distance yourself from those who have earned Allah’s anger, you are not being harsh or unkind; you are being wise and obedient, placing your trust in Allah over the fleeting gains of this world.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own circles of influence. Who are your closest friends and advisors? Do they draw you closer to Allah, or do they pull you away from Him? Allah has promised that true honor, success, and peace lie in His obedience and in the company of the righteous. So choose your companions carefully, and let your love and loyalty be for Allah alone.

And remember: the Hereafter is real, and it is eternal. Do not trade it for a handful of worldly crumbs. The disbelievers have despaired of it because they do not believe—but you, O believer, have been given the gift of certainty. Hold fast to it, and let it guide every choice you make.

📜 Verse 11-13 — Al-Mumtahanah

And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the inhabitants of the graves.
