Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Aʿazz (الأعز): The mightier, the more powerful, the one with greater honor and strength.
- Al-Adhall (الأذل): The weaker, the more humiliated, the one with less honor and status.
- Al-ʿIzzah (العزة): Honor, power, might, and invincible strength.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse exposes the arrogant and misguided words of the hypocrites, specifically their leader ʿAbdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. After the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq, a dispute arose between the Muhajirun (emigrants) and the Ansar (helpers), and Ibn Ubayy—filled with pride and resentment—declared: "If we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely drive out the weaker." By "the mightier," he meant himself and his people; by "the weaker," he meant the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the believers. This was a statement of sheer ignorance and arrogance, for he imagined that worldly status, tribal numbers, or social standing were the true measures of honor.
But Allah—Glorified and Exalted—immediately refutes this false claim with a timeless and decisive truth: "And to Allah belongs all honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers." True might, real honor, and lasting glory are not found in wealth, lineage, or numbers. They are found only in Allah—the Owner of all power—and He bestows that honor upon His Messenger ﷺ and upon the believers who follow him in faith and righteousness. The honor of the believers is not dependent on the approval of the hypocrites or the powerful of this world; it is granted by Allah Himself, who raises the humble and humiliates the arrogant.
The verse concludes: "But the hypocrites do not know." Their ignorance is not a lack of intelligence, but a blindness of the heart. They measure honor by the standards of this fleeting world, unaware that the true scales of honor are in Allah's hands. Had they known, they would never have uttered such words.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for every Muslim. How often do we feel weak, outnumbered, or looked down upon by the world? How often do we see the arrogant and the powerful boasting of their status? Let this verse be your anchor: honor is not in the eyes of people—it is in the sight of Allah. If you are a believer, you are already honored, regardless of how the world sees you. The hypocrites of Madinah thought they were the "mighty" ones, yet history recorded their disgrace, while the believers—whom they called "weak"—were granted victory, dignity, and eternal remembrance. So hold your head high with faith, rely on Allah, and know that the final triumph belongs to Him, His Messenger, and the believers—in this life and in the Hereafter.
