Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah — the Most Wise — strikes a powerful and striking example for those who disbelieve, showing them that no connection, no lineage, and no proximity to righteous people can benefit a person who persists in disbelief and evil deeds. Allah presents the case of two women: the wife of Prophet Nuh (Noah) and the wife of Prophet Lut (Lot), peace be upon them both.
These two women were married to two of Allah's righteous servants — prophets of high rank and noble character. They lived in the very homes of revelation, witnessing the guidance, the miracles, and the pure conduct of their husbands. Yet, despite this immense privilege, they betrayed their husbands — not in matters of chastity, but in faith. The wife of Nuh used to mock her husband and say to her people, "He is mad," while the wife of Lut would inform the wicked people of her husband's guests so they could come and commit their evil acts. They sided with the disbelievers against their own prophet husbands.
And what was the outcome? When the punishment of Allah came, the prophets could not protect their wives in the least. Their righteousness, their prophethood, and their love for their wives did not avail them — nor did the wives' proximity to them avail the wives. The command was given: "Enter the Fire, both of you, along with those who enter."
This example carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: salvation is not inherited, and it is not earned through association. What matters is one's own faith, deeds, and obedience to Allah. A person may sit with the righteous, live among the scholars, or even be related to the best of creation — yet none of that will benefit them if their heart is void of faith and their actions are corrupt.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. If the wives of prophets — who lived in the most blessed households — were not saved by their proximity to their righteous husbands, then what about us? We cannot rely on the righteousness of our parents, our teachers, or our communities. Each soul is responsible for its own faith and deeds.
But there is also a beautiful, hopeful side to this: your own righteousness is never wasted. Your faith, your prayers, your honesty, and your kindness are what will save you — not your connections. So turn to Allah sincerely, purify your intentions, and strive to be among those who enter Paradise through their own faith and good deeds. Do not let anyone deceive you into thinking that being around good people is enough. Be one of the good people yourself.
And remember: Allah's justice is perfect. He does not wrong anyone. He gave these two women the choice, and they chose disbelief. He gives you the choice today — choose Him, choose faith, choose the path that leads to eternal bliss.
