Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are brought to account, Allah will command them to enter the Fire along with the nations of jinn and humans who came before them and who likewise rejected the truth. This is not merely an individual entry — it is an entry into a shared destiny of punishment, joining the ranks of those who persisted in disbelief throughout history.
As each community enters the Fire, it curses its sister community — the one that preceded it in misguidance and whose example it followed. The followers curse the leaders, and the later generations curse the earlier ones, each blaming the other for leading them astray. This mutual cursing continues until all of them have gathered together in the Fire.
At that point, the last of them — the followers and the lowly — speak to their Lord, not to their leaders directly, saying: *"Our Lord, these are the ones who led us astray. They misguided us from the path of truth. So give them a double punishment of the Fire."* They ask for their leaders to receive a multiplied torment because they not only went astray themselves but also caused others to go astray.
Allah responds to their plea with perfect justice: *"For each one of you there is a double punishment."* The leaders receive punishment for their own disbelief and for misleading others, and the followers receive punishment for their own disbelief and for blindly following without seeking the truth. Neither group is excused, and neither is treated unjustly. However, Allah says: *"But you do not know"* — meaning that the followers do not realize the severity of what awaits their leaders, nor do they comprehend the full extent of the punishment that each party will face. They assume their leaders will suffer more, but in reality, everyone's punishment is multiplied according to their deeds, and the reality of that torment is far beyond what any of them can imagine.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every human being. It reminds us that we are responsible for our own choices, and that no one will be able to shift that responsibility onto another on the Day of Judgment. The leaders will not be able to escape their burden, and the followers will not be excused for their blind obedience to falsehood.
How beautiful is the justice of Allah! He does not wrong anyone, and He multiplies punishment according to the extent of one's sin and its impact on others. This should inspire us to be careful about whom we follow and what we believe. It should also motivate us to seek the truth with sincerity, to use the intellect Allah has given us, and to never surrender our judgment to those who call us toward anything that contradicts the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
The Quran is a mercy and a light — it warns us before it is too late, so that we may not find ourselves among those who curse one another in the Fire. Let us take heed today, while we still have the opportunity to repent, to believe, and to do righteous deeds. For Allah's door of repentance is open, and His mercy encompasses all things — but the Day when this scene unfolds will be too late for regrets.
