Explanation of the Verse:
There is no one more unjust or oppressive than the one who invents lies against Allah — whether by claiming He has a partner, attributing to Him what He did not say, or describing Him with imperfection — or the one who denies His clear signs and revelations that guide humanity to the straight path. Such people have reached the ultimate peak of wrongdoing, for their sin is committed directly against their Creator and Sustainer.
These wrongdoers will receive their full allotted share of what was decreed for them in the Preserved Tablet — whether good or evil, provision, life span, and even the punishment that is destined for them in this world and the Hereafter. Nothing of what was written for them will be withheld, and no part of their destiny will escape them.
Then comes the most critical moment — when the angel of death and his assistants arrive to take their souls. At that terrifying hour, the angels rebuke them, saying: "Where are those beings you used to call upon and worship besides Allah — your idols, your false deities, your so-called intercessors? Call them now to save you from what you are facing!" This is a question of humiliation and reproach, exposing the utter helplessness of their false gods.
At that moment, the truth becomes crystal clear to them, and they answer: "They have vanished from us!" — meaning those deities have disappeared and cannot be found, nor can they help in any way. In that final hour, they bear witness against their own souls, confessing that they were indeed disbelievers who rejected the oneness of Allah. But this confession comes too late — it serves only as evidence against them, not as a means of salvation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this scene! How many people today are living exactly like those described in this verse — inventing falsehoods about Allah, denying His signs, worshipping their desires, wealth, status, or false ideologies instead of their true Lord? The angels' question echoes through time: "Where are those you called upon besides Allah?" When death approaches, every false refuge will vanish, every false god will fail, and every soul will stand alone before its Creator.
The Qur'an presents this vivid scene not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken us while there is still time. Today, the door of repentance is wide open. Today, you can turn to Allah and find Him merciful and forgiving. Today, you can abandon every false worship and submit to the One who created you, sustains you, and loves you more than a mother loves her child. Do not wait until the angels come to take your soul — for then, confession will not benefit you, and regret will be of no avail.
Allah calls you now, in this very moment: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53). This is your golden opportunity — seize it before it slips away, and become among those who will hear the angels greet them with peace and glad tidings instead of reproach.
