Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day of Judgment, when the people of Hell are cast into its blazing fire, a bitter argument breaks out among them. The leaders and chiefs — those who were followed in life and who called others to misguidance — turn to their followers and say: *"You have no superiority over us."* They mean: "We are all equal in this punishment. You followed us willingly; you were not forced. You had minds and intellects, yet you chose to obey us in sin and disbelief. So do not think you have any merit over us, nor any excuse that would lighten your share of the torment."
Then Allah, the Most Just, addresses them all — leaders and followers alike — with a decisive command: *"So taste the punishment for what you used to earn."* This is a stern reminder that every soul is recompensed for its own deeds. The leaders are punished for their misguidance and their call to evil, and the followers are punished for their blind obedience and their abandonment of truth. Neither group can shift the blame onto the other, for each person is accountable for their own choices.
This verse carries a profound lesson for us in this life: Do not blindly follow anyone — no matter how influential, powerful, or charismatic — without verifying their words against the Book of Allah and the authentic Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him). On that Day, no leader will be able to save his follower, and no follower will be able to claim ignorance as an excuse. The path of truth is clear, and the responsibility to walk it lies squarely on your own shoulders.
Beloved reader, let this scene awaken your heart. The fire of Hell is real, and its inhabitants will exchange nothing but blame and regret. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent you the Qur'an and the Sunnah as a guiding light. Hold fast to them, seek knowledge with sincerity, and choose your companions and leaders wisely. For the one who follows the truth in this world will be among the successful in the Hereafter, while the one who follows falsehood will taste the bitter fruit of his own choices. May Allah protect us all from the Fire and guide us to the straight path.
