Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "mā yūʿadūn" — what they are promised, meaning the punishment and torment that Allah has warned the disbelievers of in this world.
- "aḍʿafu nāṣiran" — weaker in providing help or support.
- "aqallu ʿadadan" — fewer in number, referring to supporters and allies.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and all believers, saying: "Wait for them, O Muhammad, and give them respite. Do not be distressed by their mockery or their denial. For the matter is not as they imagine — rather, the truth will become utterly clear to them on the Day when they see with their own eyes what they were promised."
The verse describes the state of the disbelievers who persist in their arrogance and rejection of the truth. They continue in their stubbornness until the moment when the promised punishment arrives — whether that be at the moment of death, on the Day of Resurrection, or when they witness the triumph of the believers in this world. At that very moment, when the reality of what they denied crashes upon them like a wave, they will finally know with absolute certainty who was truly weak and helpless.
And what will they realize? They will realize that *they* — the disbelievers — are the ones who are weakest in support and fewest in number. Despite all their boasts of power, wealth, and allies in this worldly life, when the truth of Allah's promise unfolds, they will find that all their supposed supporters have abandoned them. No one can protect them from Allah's decree. Their idols, their false gods, their tribal alliances, their wealth, and their armies — all will prove utterly useless. Meanwhile, the believers, whom they mocked as weak and few, will be supported by Allah Himself, and His support is the mightiest of all.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: do not be deceived by the apparent strength of falsehood, and do not be disheartened by the small number of truth's followers. The scales of true power are not measured by worldly standards. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who holds all dominion in His hands, is the true Supporter of His righteous servants. When the final hour comes, the tables will turn completely, and those who seemed mighty will be humiliated, while those who seemed weak will be exalted.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to open your eyes to the reality of this life. How many tyrants have walked the earth with armies at their command, only to be brought to nothing in an instant? How many nations have boasted of their power, only to crumble before the will of Allah? The promise of Allah is true, and His support for His believing servants is guaranteed. So hold firm to your faith, and do not envy the apparent strength of those who reject the truth — for their end is weakness, and your end, by Allah's mercy, is victory and honor.
