Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Waylun (وَيْلٌ): Destruction, severe punishment, and intense suffering. It is a word of threat and warning denoting great calamity.
- Yawma-idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): On that Day — referring to the Day of Resurrection.
- Lil-mukadhdhibīn (لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ): For those who deny and reject — specifically those who deny the truth brought by the Messengers and the signs of Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse delivers a stern and powerful warning: "Destruction and severe punishment on that Day for those who deny." It refers to the Day of Judgment, when every soul will face the consequences of its deeds. The "deniers" mentioned here are those who rejected the Messengers of Allah, disbelieved in His signs, and refused to accept the truth that was made clear to them.
The threat is not limited to one type of denial — it encompasses all forms of rejection: denying the Oneness of Allah, denying the prophethood of His Messengers, denying the Qur'an, and denying the reality of the Hereafter. These are people who were presented with clear evidence, undeniable proofs, and a Book that explains everything — its rulings, its wisdom, and its news — yet they turned away in arrogance and stubbornness.
If they do not believe in this Qur'an — which is the ultimate miracle, unmatched in its words and meanings, clear in its guidance and decisive in its judgment — then what other book or speech could possibly convince them? The Qur'an is the final revelation, the most complete and the most eloquent. Whoever rejects it after it has reached them has closed every door to guidance and has no excuse left before Allah.
On that Day, the reality of their denial will become painfully clear. The punishment they mocked or ignored in this world will surround them from every side, and there will be no escape, no intercessor, and no second chance. Their loss will be complete, and their regret will be overwhelming — but regret on that Day will be of no benefit.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a call to wake up before it is too late. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left us without guidance — He sent His Messengers, revealed His Books, and made the path to salvation clear. The warning here is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts to the reality of our choices. Every one of us will stand before our Lord, and on that Day, the deniers will wish they had listened, believed, and acted.
But today — right now — the door of repentance is open. The Qur'an is before us, calling us to light, to peace, and to eternal success. Let us not be among those who hear the truth and turn away. Let us be among those who respond to their Lord with faith and good deeds, so that when that Day comes, we will be greeted with mercy, not with "Waylun" — destruction. The choice is ours, and the time is now.
