Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ta'ifatan (الطائفتين): The two groups — the caravan (the trade convoy of Quraysh led by Abu Sufyan) and the army (the armed force of Quraysh led by Abu Jahl).
- Ghayr Dhat al-Shawkah (غير ذات الشوكة): The one without sharpness or strength — meaning the caravan, which had no military power or fighting capability. *Shawkah* refers to strength, fierceness, and formidable resistance.
- Yuḥiqq al-Ḥaqq (يُحق الحق): To establish, manifest, and make the truth prevail and triumphant.
- Bikalimatihi (بكلماته): By His decree, command, and divine will — specifically His command to the believers to fight.
- Yaqṭaʿ dābir al-kāfirīn (يقطع دابر الكافرين): To cut off the very root and last trace of the disbelievers — meaning their complete destruction and annihilation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, remember the immense favor and divine promise of Allah upon you in the early days of Islam, when you were facing the great battle of Badr. At that time, Allah had promised you victory over one of two targets: either the wealthy, unguarded trade caravan of the Quraysh returning from Syria, laden with goods and riches, or the well-armed, formidable army of the Quraysh that had marched out to protect that caravan and to crush you.
You, however, in your human weakness and love for ease, wished for the easier prize — the caravan that had no military strength, no sharpness of resistance, no swords or spears to oppose you. You desired it because it seemed simple, safe, and profitable, sparing you the terror of battle. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom and perfect plan, willed something far greater and more noble for you. He willed to establish the truth of Islam and make it manifest and supreme through His divine decree — by commanding you to engage the armed force of the disbelievers in combat. He wanted you to face the formidable army so that through your steadfastness and faith, the power of Islam would be demonstrated, the pride of the polytheists would be shattered, and the very roots of disbelief would be severed, leaving no trace of their strength upon the earth.
Allah chose for you the harder path because He knew that true honor, lasting glory, and the victory that elevates the Ummah come not through easy gains, but through sacrifice, courage, and unwavering trust in Him. He wanted to show the world that His religion prevails not by wealth or numbers, but by the sincere faith and steadfastness of His believing servants.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah's choice for you is always better than your own choice for yourself. You may desire the easy, comfortable, and risk-free path, but Allah, who knows what lies ahead, often directs you toward the more challenging road because it carries greater blessings, deeper growth, and more magnificent outcomes. Just as the believers at Badr were reluctant to fight but Allah made that battle the turning point that established Islam and humiliated disbelief forever, so too should you trust Allah's plan even when it seems difficult. When you submit your will to His, you will find that what seemed like hardship was actually the gateway to victory, honor, and eternal reward. So embrace Allah's decree with patience and confidence, for His wisdom surpasses all understanding, and His promise is always true.
