Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Awliyaa (أولياء): Close allies, protectors, intimate friends, or confidants to whom one reveals secrets and from whom one seeks counsel.
- Istawhabbu (استحبّوا): They preferred or chose with inclination and desire.
- Zalimun (ظالمون): Wrongdoers, those who commit injustice against themselves by violating Allah's commands.
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have sincerely believed in Allah and followed what His Messenger brought—do not take your fathers, brothers, or other close relatives as intimate allies, protectors, or confidants to whom you disclose the secrets of the believers and with whom you consult in your affairs, if they have chosen disbelief over faith and remain hostile to Islam. Their preference for disbelief makes them unfit for your trust and loyalty, regardless of how close they are to you by blood.
Whoever among you takes them as allies, showing them affection and relying on them while they persist in disbelief, has indeed disobeyed Allah and wronged his own soul in the gravest manner. Such a person has placed his loyalty in the wrong place, exposing himself to destruction through sin, and has abandoned the path that leads to Allah's pleasure and eternal success.
This verse teaches us a profound principle: faith takes precedence over all human bonds, even the most sacred ones of kinship. The believer's ultimate loyalty belongs to Allah and His cause. While Islam commands us to treat our relatives with kindness and maintain family ties, this must never come at the cost of compromising our faith or supporting those who oppose Allah's religion.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, ponder this divine guidance with an open heart. Allah, in His infinite mercy, is protecting you from the greatest harm—the harm of your faith being weakened or destroyed through misplaced loyalty. He knows that a relative who prefers disbelief over faith can become a means of pulling you away from the straight path, so He lovingly warns you.
This verse is not a call to sever family ties or to be harsh with non-Muslim relatives. Rather, it is a call to prioritize your relationship with Allah above all else. You can still be kind, generous, and compassionate toward your relatives—Islam encourages this—but your inner circle of trust, your confidants, and those whose counsel shapes your decisions must be people who share your faith and your commitment to Allah.
Today, as you read these words, ask yourself: Who are my closest allies? Whose opinions influence my choices? Do I seek counsel from those who strengthen my faith or those who weaken it? The answer to these questions determines the health of your spiritual life.
Take this verse as a beautiful reminder that Allah knows what is best for you. He does not forbid you from loving your family; He forbids you from allowing anyone—no matter how dear—to lead you away from Him. When you place Allah first, He will bless your relationships, protect your heart, and guide you to success in this life and the next. Let this divine instruction be a source of strength, not sadness, for it is a sign of Allah's profound care for His believing servants.
