Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Falyadhaku (فَلْيَضْحَكُوا): Let them laugh — an imperative form used here as a threat and a decree of their fate, not a command of choice.
- Qalilan (قَلِيلًا): A little — referring to the brief, fleeting laughter in this worldly life.
- Walyabku (وَلْيَبْكُوا): And let them weep — again in the imperative form, indicating a certain, inevitable outcome.
- Kathiran (كَثِيرًا): Much — referring to the prolonged, unending weeping in the Hereafter.
- Jaza'an (جَزَاءً): As a recompense — a fair and just reward for their deeds.
- Bima kanu yaksibun (بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ): For what they used to earn — meaning the sins, hypocrisy, and disbelief they accumulated in life.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful, direct address to the hypocrites who stayed behind from the expedition of Tabuk, refusing to join the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in jihad for the sake of Allah. Allah, the Most High, says: "Let them laugh a little and weep much — as a recompense for what they used to earn."
The meaning is clear and profound: these hypocrites may enjoy their laughter and mockery in this fleeting world, but their joy is temporary and limited. Their laughter in the life of this world is "little" — not because it is short in duration alone, but because it is utterly insignificant compared to what awaits them. In contrast, their weeping in the Hereafter will be "much" — endless, severe, and accompanied by the torment of Hellfire. This weeping is not like the tears of mercy or repentance; it is the weeping of regret, despair, and punishment.
The verse uses the imperative form ("let them laugh," "let them weep") not as a command of choice, but as a declaration of what will inevitably happen. It is a divine decree: they laughed in this world, so they will weep in the next. This is the recompense for their hypocrisy, their disbelief, and their sins — a just and fitting consequence of what their own hands had earned.
This verse serves as a stern warning to all who mock the believers, who evade their duties, and who live in hypocrisy. It reminds us that this worldly life is but a passing moment, and that the true, lasting life is the Hereafter. Every action, every laugh, and every tear is accounted for, and no one escapes the justice of Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own heart. How often do we laugh and jest, forgetting the reality of our standing before Allah? How often do we delay our duties, excuse ourselves from good deeds, and find comfort in the temporary pleasures of this world?
The hypocrites laughed — but their laughter turned to eternal weeping. The believers, on the other hand, may weep in this world out of fear of Allah and love for Him, but their tears will be replaced with everlasting joy in Paradise. The choice is yours: will you be among those who laugh briefly and weep forever, or among those who strive sincerely and rejoice eternally?
Turn to Allah now, before the laughter fades and the weeping begins. Repent sincerely, and let your tears in this life — tears of regret, humility, and devotion — become the means of your salvation. For Allah is Most Merciful, and He accepts the repentance of those who return to Him with a sincere heart. Do not be like the hypocrites who delayed and mocked; be like the true believers who hastened to obedience and found peace in their Lord.
