Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "رَجَعَكَ" (raja‘aka): To bring you back or return you.
- "طَائِفَةٍ" (tā’ifah): A group or party — here referring to a segment of the hypocrites who remained behind.
- "الْخَالِفِينَ" (al-khālifīn): Those who stayed behind — specifically the excused ones (the weak, the sick, women, and children) who did not join the expedition.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, if Allah brings you back from this campaign (Tabuk) and you encounter a group of those hypocrites who remained behind — and note that not all who stayed behind were hypocrites, for some had valid excuses — and they then ask your permission to go out with you on a future military expedition, do not grant them that honour. Say to them clearly and firmly: "You will never go out with me again, and you will never fight an enemy alongside me." This is a decisive and permanent prohibition, serving as both a punishment for their hypocrisy and a protective measure, for their presence in the ranks of the believers would only breed discord, weaken resolve, and spread doubt.
The reason for this stern verdict is stated plainly: "You were content to stay behind the first time" — meaning, when the call for jihad came during the expedition of Tabuk, you chose comfort over sacrifice, ease over struggle, and you preferred your homes and wealth over the cause of Allah. You made your choice willingly, so now you must live with its consequence: "So sit with those who remain behind" — that is, stay with the excused ones — the women, the children, and those with genuine impediments — for you have placed yourselves in their ranks by your own choice, and you shall not be elevated to the station of the mujāhidīn (those who strive in Allah’s path).
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the opportunity to serve Allah’s cause is a noble honour that must not be taken lightly. When Allah opens a door of goodness for you — whether it be jihad, seeking knowledge, or any act of worship — seize it with sincerity and eagerness, for you do not know if that door will open for you again. The hypocrites of Madinah missed their chance, and their regret was sealed with exclusion from future honour. But for the sincere believer, every moment is a chance to draw closer to Allah — so hasten to good deeds, and never let laziness or worldly comfort rob you of the greatest rewards. Allah loves those who strive in His path, and He honours those who sacrifice for His sake with a station that no worldly pleasure can match. Let this verse inspire you to be among the foremost in good, not among those who lag behind.
