Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:
This verse exposes the ugly reality of the hypocrites who were left behind during the expedition of Tabuk — a journey that took place in the scorching heat of summer, over long distances, and under the most difficult circumstances. Instead of feeling regret or shame for abandoning the Prophet ﷺ and his noble companions, these hypocrites actually *rejoiced* in their staying behind. They were pleased with their decision to sit comfortably in their homes in Madinah, while the believers were enduring hardship and sacrificing their wealth and their very lives in the path of Allah.
Their joy was not merely a passive feeling — it was rooted in a deep-seated aversion to the call of faith. They *hated* the very idea of striving with their wealth and their souls in the cause of Allah. They did not believe in the reward that Allah has prepared for the mujāhidūn, so they saw no value in spending their money or risking their lives. And not only did they refuse to go themselves, but they actively tried to discourage others, saying to one another: *"Do not go forth in the heat!"* — as if the temporary heat of this world was a valid excuse to abandon the eternal commands of Allah.
Then Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to respond to them with a powerful rebuttal: "Say: The fire of Hell is even more intense in heat." This is a profound and piercing reply. If they were truly fleeing from heat, then let them know that the heat they will face in the Hereafter — the fire of Jahannam — is far more severe and far more lasting. They were running away from a temporary discomfort, only to throw themselves into an eternal torment. Had they truly understood — had they possessed even a shred of real comprehension — they would have realized that the hardship of jihad in this world is nothing compared to the punishment of Allah, and that the reward of striving in His path is infinitely greater than any comfort they tried to preserve.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. It warns us against the disease of laziness, comfort-seeking, and prioritizing our own ease over the commands of Allah. It reminds us that true understanding (fiqh) is not merely intellectual knowledge — it is the ability to see through the temporary pleasures of this world and recognize what truly matters: the pleasure of Allah and the safety from His punishment. The hypocrites thought they were clever by avoiding the heat, but in reality, they were the greatest fools, for they traded an hour of discomfort for an eternity of blazing fire.
Let this verse be a wake-up call for us all. When we are called to sacrifice — whether with our time, our wealth, or our efforts — let us not be like those who rejoiced in staying behind. Let us instead be like the true believers who rushed to respond to the call of Allah and His Messenger, knowing that whatever we give in this world, Allah will replace it with something far better, and that the cool shade of Allah's mercy on the Day of Judgment is worth more than all the comforts of this fleeting life. May Allah protect us from the traits of the hypocrites and grant us the true understanding that leads to sincere action.
