Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-A‘rāb (الأعراب): The Bedouin Arabs, dwellers of the desert and rural areas.
  • Ashaddu kufran wa nifāqan (أشد كفرًا ونفاقًا): More severe in disbelief and hypocrisy.
  • Ajdaru (أجدر): More deserving, more likely, more fitting.
  • Ḥudūd (حدود): The limits, boundaries, and prescribed rulings of the religion — the obligations, prohibitions, and laws.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah Almighty describes the condition of the Bedouin Arabs — those who live in the desert, far from urban centers and the company of scholars. Allah informs us that their disbelief and hypocrisy are more intense and severe than that of the settled city-dwellers. Why is this so? Because of their harsh nature, the coarseness of their hearts, and their distance from the gatherings of knowledge, wisdom, and remembrance of Allah. They rarely mix with the people of learning, and they are far from hearing the Qur’an recited and from learning the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

For this reason, they are even more deserving of being ignorant of the limits of what Allah has revealed to His Messenger — the clear commands, prohibitions, and the boundaries of the sacred law. Their rugged lifestyle and lack of exposure to divine instruction make them more prone to falling into severe disbelief and hypocrisy when they do fall into it, and less likely to grasp the finer details of the religion.

Yet, Allah does not leave them — or anyone — without guidance. He is Ever-Knowing of the true state of all His servants, whether they are Bedouin or settled, whether they hide disbelief in their hearts or display faith. Nothing is hidden from Him. And He is All-Wise in His decree and His legislation — He places people in different circumstances, tests them in various ways, and rewards or punishes according to His perfect wisdom and justice.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of us. It teaches us the immense value of seeking knowledge, sitting with the righteous, and staying connected to the sources of guidance — the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. The further we distance ourselves from these lights, the harder our hearts become, and the more vulnerable we are to confusion and deviation. But the closer we draw to Allah, His Book, and His Messenger ﷺ, the softer our hearts grow, the clearer our vision becomes, and the stronger our faith stands against the storms of doubt and temptation.

So let us seize every opportunity to learn our religion, to attend circles of knowledge, and to reflect on the words of our Lord. For Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has made knowledge the key to steadfastness and the shield against hypocrisy. And He, the All-Knowing and All-Wise, sees every effort we make to draw near to Him — and He will never let it go to waste.

📜 Verse 95-99 — At-Tawbah

They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.
They swear to you so that you might be satisfied with them. But if you should be satisfied with them - indeed, Allah is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people.
The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allah has revealed to His Messenger. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And among the bedouins are some who consider what they spend as a loss and await for you turns of misfortune. Upon them will be a misfortune of evil. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
But among the bedouins are some who believe in Allah and the Last Day and consider what they spend as means of nearness to Allah and of [obtaining] invocations of the Messenger. Unquestionably, it is a means of nearness for them. Allah will admit them to His mercy. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
