Explanation of the Verse:
Among the Bedouin Arabs—those who dwell in the desert outskirts—there is a category of hypocrites whose hearts are diseased. When they spend their wealth in the cause of Allah, whether in charity or in supporting the Muslim community, they do not do so seeking Allah’s pleasure or hoping for His reward. Rather, they view their spending as a painful loss, a fine they are forced to pay, and a burden they carry reluctantly. They give only out of fear of being exposed or under social pressure, and sometimes merely for show and hypocrisy.
Worse still, these people do not merely withhold their hearts from good—they actively wish and wait for disasters to strike you, O believers. They hope that the wheel of time will turn against you: that you will face defeat, hardship, or calamity, and that the Muslims will be overcome by their enemies. They eagerly await the moment when your strength crumbles and your affairs collapse.
But Allah, in His perfect justice and wisdom, turns their evil wishes back upon them. The very calamities they hope will befall you will instead befall them. The circle of misfortune, ruin, and humiliation will close around them, not around the believers. They will taste the bitterness of what they wished for you, and they will see nothing from the religion of Muhammad ﷺ except what grieves them.
And Allah is Samī‘ (All-Hearing)—He hears every word they utter, every whisper of their tongues, and every plot they speak among themselves. And He is ‘Alīm (All-Knowing)—He knows perfectly the corrupt intentions hidden in their hearts, the malice they conceal, and the schemes they devise. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and no secret is hidden from Him.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear believer, let this verse be a source of comfort and reassurance for you. When you see people who oppose the truth, who spend reluctantly and wish for your downfall, remember that Allah is fully aware of their plots. He does not leave you unprotected. The One who hears every whisper and knows every hidden intention is your Guardian and Protector.
Do not let the scheming of hypocrites trouble your heart. Their plans are but fragile threads that Allah can unravel in an instant. The evil they desire for you will return upon them, and the good they withhold will be a witness against them. So spend your wealth in the way of Allah with a sincere heart, seeking His reward and trusting in His promise. For every dirham you give in His cause is not a loss—it is an investment with the One who never breaks His promise.
And know that Allah’s hearing and knowledge encompass everything. He hears your prayers, your supplications, and your sincere words. He knows your struggles, your sacrifices, and the purity of your intentions. So hold firm to your faith, and let your trust in Him be unshakable. For the circle of evil falls upon those who wish it for others, while the believers are under the protection of the Most Merciful.
