Word Meanings:
- Al-Qari'ah (القارعة): The Striking Calamity, the Day of Resurrection. It is derived from the root verb *qara'a* (قرع), meaning "to strike" or "to knock." It is so named because it strikes the hearts of people with overwhelming terror and awe, or because it strikes creation with its sudden, catastrophic events.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse asks a rhetorical question: "What is the Striking Calamity?" It is not a question seeking information, but rather a device of emphasis and magnification. The purpose is to draw attention to the immense gravity and terrifying nature of this event. The repetition of the word in the following verse further intensifies this sense of awe.
The Striking Calamity refers to the Day of Resurrection, when the heavens are shaken, the mountains are scattered like dust, and every soul is confronted with its deeds. The hearts of all creation will be seized with a terror so profound that it defies description. By posing this question, the Qur'an invites the listener to pause and reflect: How great is this event that even the mention of it demands such emphasis? It is a day whose horror no mind can fully grasp, and whose consequences are eternal.
A Da'wah Reflection:
O servant of Allah, have you ever pondered what that Day will truly be like? The Qur'an does not merely inform us of a distant event—it awakens our hearts to a reality we must prepare for. The Striking Calamity is not a myth or a tale; it is a certainty that will befall every one of us. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent us this warning not to frighten us into despair, but to guide us toward hope and action. He has given us the Qur'an, the Prophet ﷺ, and the path of righteousness so that when that Day strikes, we may be among those who meet it with peace, not panic. Let this question echo in your heart today: "What is the Striking Calamity?" And let it move you to draw closer to your Lord, for the One who warns you of that Day is the same One who opens the doors of His mercy to you before it arrives. Do not delay—return to Him now, and you will find Him waiting with forgiveness and love.
