And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Qari'ah (القارعة): The Striking Calamity — the Day of Judgment that strikes hearts with overwhelming terror.
  • Ma adraaka (ما أدراك): What will make you know — an expression used in the Qur'an to emphasize the immense magnitude and incomprehensible nature of what follows.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a rhetorical question posed by Allah to His Messenger ﷺ, and through him to all of humanity. It means: "And what will make you know, O Messenger, what the Striking Calamity truly is?"

The purpose of this question is not to seek information, but to magnify the matter and to highlight that the reality of the Day of Judgment is beyond human comprehension. No mind can fully grasp its terror, and no description can do justice to its horrors. The Qur'anic style of repeating the question — first stating "The Striking Calamity! What is the Striking Calamity?" and then asking "And what will make you know what the Striking Calamity is?" — serves to build awe and dread in the hearts of the listeners.

This is the Day when hearts will pound violently in fear, when people will be scattered like moths and mountains will become like carded wool. It is the ultimate reality that every soul must face — the day of reckoning, reward, and punishment. The repetition emphasizes that even the Prophet ﷺ, despite his noble status and divine revelation, cannot fully comprehend the magnitude of that Day until he witnesses it himself.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse awakens within us a profound sense of urgency. If the Prophet ﷺ — the most knowledgeable of creation — was told that he cannot fully grasp the reality of the Striking Calamity, then how can we afford to be heedless of it? The Qur'an does not leave us in ignorance; rather, it invites us to prepare for that Day while we still have time. Every prayer we offer, every kindness we extend, every sin we avoid is an investment for that moment when the Striking Calamity arrives. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the Qur'an and the Sunnah as our guide, and has sent us the Prophet ﷺ as a mercy to warn us and give us glad tidings. Let us not be among those who are distracted by the fleeting pleasures of this world, but rather let us be among those who live with the Hereafter always in their hearts — for that Day is nearer to each of us than we think.
