Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "ʿābidūn" (عابدون): Active worshippers, those who devote themselves to worship.
- "mā aʿbud" (ما أعبد): What I worship — referring to Allah alone, the One and Only God.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Quraysh with a clear and decisive statement: "Nor are you worshippers of what I worship." This is the second part of a mutual negation that began in the previous verse. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) declares that just as he does not worship their false gods, they do not truly worship Allah alone — even if they claimed to acknowledge Him as the Creator. Their worship was corrupted by associating partners with Him, such as idols, statues, and other deities. They might have said they worshipped Allah, but their actions — offering sacrifices, prayers, and devotion to idols — proved otherwise. True worship of Allah requires sincerity and exclusivity; it cannot be mixed with polytheism. Therefore, their claim to worship Allah was false, because they worshipped Him while also worshipping others alongside Him.
Reflection and Daʿwah:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: worship is not merely a label or a claim — it is a reality that must be pure and directed to Allah alone. Imagine a king who demands absolute loyalty from his subjects; if a subject claims loyalty but bows to another ruler, the claim is void. Similarly, Allah, the Lord of all worlds, deserves worship that is untainted by any partner. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts: Are we truly worshipping Allah alone? Do our prayers, our hopes, our fears, and our love belong exclusively to Him? The beauty of Islam lies in its call to purify the heart from all forms of false devotion, freeing the soul from the shackles of created beings and elevating it to the worship of the Creator. This is the path of true freedom and peace — a peace that comes when you know that your Lord is One, and your worship is for Him alone. Let this verse be a reminder to renew your sincerity, for Allah accepts only that which is pure and devoted entirely to Him.
