Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sharri (شَرِّ): Evil, harm, or mischief.
- Ma Khalaq (مَا خَلَقَ): That which He created — encompassing all of creation.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the first half of the opening supplication in Surah Al-Falaq, where Allah teaches His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and all believers to seek refuge in Him — the Lord of the dawn — from the evil of everything He has created. The word "ma" (what) here is general and comprehensive, covering every created being or thing that possesses any capacity for harm. This includes visible creatures such as wild beasts, venomous snakes, scorpions, and harmful insects, as well as invisible harms such as evil jinn and devils. It also encompasses natural disasters, illnesses, and every form of affliction that originates from within creation. The verse does not specify particular creatures, because the believer is instructed to seek Allah's protection from the evil of *all* creation — whether it comes from humans, animals, or unseen beings, whether it is intentional or unintentional harm. This generality teaches us a profound lesson: no creature has independent power to harm; rather, all harm occurs only by Allah's will, and therefore, the only true refuge from that harm is Allah Himself, the Creator of both the harm and the protection.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, ponder the beauty of this divine instruction! Your Lord — the One who created the heavens and the earth, the One who brought you into existence from nothing — is telling you to turn to Him alone for safety. He does not tell you to seek refuge in amulets, charms, or false deities, nor in your own strength or cleverness. He directs you to Himself, the Most Merciful, the Most Powerful. When you recite this verse, you acknowledge that every harm in this universe — from the smallest microbe to the greatest calamity — is under His command. This fills the heart with tranquility and certainty: if Allah protects you, no one can harm you, and if He does not protect you, no one can save you. So make this supplication a daily habit, especially in the morning and evening, and trust in your Lord with complete confidence. He is the Best Protector, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
