Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghāsiq (غَاسِقٍ): The one that is dark or the one that brings darkness — referring to the night when it becomes intensely dark, or the moon when it sets and darkness spreads.
- Waqaba (وَقَبَ): To enter, penetrate, or settle in — meaning when darkness enters and covers everything, or when the moon sets and its light disappears.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah teaches us to seek His protection from the evil of the "ghāsiq" when it "waqaba" — that is, from the harm of the night when its darkness deepens and spreads, or from the moon when it sets and darkness takes over. The night is a time when many hidden dangers emerge: harmful creatures crawl out, evil people may plot under the cover of darkness, and the heart may be overtaken by fear or whispers. The darkness itself can be a vessel for unseen harms — from wild animals, poisonous insects, or those with ill intentions who exploit the cover of night to cause mischief. By commanding us to seek refuge in Him from the darkness of the night, Allah reminds us that He is the One who controls all times and all harms, and that His protection is the ultimate shield against every evil that lurks in the shadows.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful lesson in trust and reliance on Allah. Imagine the depth of the night — how it envelops everything, and how vulnerable a person can feel. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, gives us the words to say so that we may feel secure even in the darkest hours. He does not leave us alone; He arms us with the weapon of His remembrance. When you recite this verse, you are declaring that no matter how dark the night, no matter what dangers may hide within it, your heart is anchored in the protection of the Almighty. This is the beauty of Islam — it turns every moment of fear into an opportunity for connection with Allah, and every trial into a means of drawing closer to Him. So let this verse be a source of comfort: the darkness of the night, with all its unknowns, is under Allah's command, and He is always there for those who call upon Him.
