Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- An-Naffathat (النَّفَّاثَات): The feminine plural form referring to those who blow/spit (into knots). It denotes women who practice witchcraft by blowing into tied knots.
- Al-'Uqad (الْعُقَد): The plural of 'uqdah, meaning knots — specifically the knots tied in strings or threads for sorcery purposes.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse continues the sequence of seeking refuge in Allah, the Lord of Daybreak, from all forms of evil. Here, Allah teaches us to seek His protection from the harm of female sorcerers who blow into knots — a practice known in ancient Arabia where witches would tie knots in cords or threads and blow upon them while reciting incantations, believing this would cast spells of harm, separation, or illness upon their victims.
The verse specifically mentions "the blowers upon knots" as a distinct category of evil, highlighting that sorcery is a real and harmful practice that Allah warns us against. The wording uses the feminine plural form, as sorcery in that context was predominantly practiced by women, though the principle covers all who engage in such acts, male or female.
This form of witchcraft typically involved tying a series of knots while reciting spells, then blowing on each knot with the intention of binding the victim to a curse — such as causing hatred between spouses, inflicting sickness, or creating discord. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself was once affected by such sorcery, and Allah revealed the two chapters of refuge (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) as a divine remedy and protection.
The verse teaches us profound lessons: that we must never underestimate the reality of spiritual harm, that our ultimate protection lies solely in Allah, and that we should turn to Him with sincere reliance whenever we face any form of hidden or open evil. It also reminds us that Islam forbids practicing sorcery entirely, as it is an act of disbelief and reliance on other than Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a beautiful invitation to place your complete trust in Allah alone. When you recite this chapter, you are declaring your absolute dependence on your Creator — the One who controls all affairs, who can nullify every plot, and who is the ultimate protector of His servants. Let this be a source of tranquility for your heart: no matter what schemes or harms may surround you, Allah's protection is greater, His power is supreme, and His care for you is endless. Make it a daily habit to seek refuge in Him morning and evening, and you will find a peace that transcends all worldly worries.
