Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "حَاسِدٍ" (Hasid): An envious person — one who wishes for the removal of a blessing from another person.
  • "إِذَا حَسَدَ" (idha hasad): When envy takes hold and manifests itself — whether in the heart, speech, or actions — leading the person to act upon that envy and harm the one who is envied.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this final verse of Surah Al-Falaq, Allah teaches us to seek His protection from the harm of the envious person when envy strikes. Envy (hasad) is a destructive spiritual disease in which a person resents the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon others and wishes for those blessings to disappear — even if they do not gain anything from their loss. The Prophet ﷺ described envy as a fire that consumes good deeds, just as fire consumes wood.

The verse specifies "when he envies" — meaning when envy moves from a mere feeling in the heart to actual manifestation. This can take many forms: harmful words, evil glances, scheming, or outright attempts to destroy what another person has. Not every envious person acts upon their envy, but when they do, their harm can be severe — affecting one's wealth, health, relationships, or peace of mind.

This verse comes at the end of a surah that teaches us to seek refuge in Allah, the Lord of the dawn, from all forms of evil — from the darkness of the night, from the mischief of those who practice witchcraft, and finally, from the envy of the envious. It is a comprehensive protection that covers both the seen and unseen harms, the spiritual and the physical.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson about the nature of human relationships and the importance of purifying our hearts. Envy is one of the oldest sins — it was the first sin committed in the heavens when Iblis envied Adam, and the first sin committed on earth when Qabil (Cain) envied his brother Habil (Abel). It is a disease that harms the envier more than the envied, for while the envied person continues to enjoy their blessings, the envier lives in constant torment, burning with resentment.

Islam teaches us a beautiful alternative: instead of envying others, we should admire their blessings and pray for even greater goodness for them. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, and be brothers, O servants of Allah." When you see a blessing upon your brother or sister, say: "Masha'Allah, tabarak Allah" — acknowledging that all goodness comes from Allah, and asking Him to increase it.

And for those who fear the harm of envy, this verse is a powerful reminder that your ultimate protection lies not in hiding your blessings or living in fear, but in turning to Allah — the One who grants blessings and protects them. Seek refuge in Him, recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, and trust that no harm can touch you except what Allah has decreed. The envious person's schemes are weak, but Allah's protection is mighty.

So let this verse be a source of tranquility for your heart: Allah knows your struggles, He sees the harm directed at you, and He is your best protector. Turn to Him sincerely, and He will shield you from every evil — seen and unseen, known and unknown.
