Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Haqq (الحق): The absolute truth, which is the revelation and guidance sent by Allah.
- Surādiq (سرادق): The encompassing canopy or wall of fire that surrounds the disbelievers from all sides.
- Al-Muhl (المهل): The scalding, murky liquid resembling molten metal or thick, boiling oil—often described as the dark, foul dregs of oil.
- Yashwi (يشوي): To roast or sear, indicating the extreme heat that burns the skin.
- Murtafaq (مرتفق): A resting place, dwelling, or place of comfort—here used ironically to describe the terrible abode of Hell.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, proclaim to those who are heedless and lost in the distractions of this world: "What I have brought to you is the truth from your Lord—it is not from my own desire or invention, but a revelation from the Creator of the heavens and the earth." This truth is clear, complete, and sufficient for anyone who seeks guidance.
Then comes the decisive choice, stated in a tone of warning and empowerment: "So whoever wills, let him believe, and whoever wills, let him disbelieve." This is not an invitation to choose falsehood, but a declaration that the path has been made clear, and every soul bears the responsibility for its own choice. The believer will reap the fruits of faith, while the disbeliever will face the consequences of rejection—and no one wrongs but themselves.
For those who choose oppression and disbelief, Allah has prepared a Fire whose canopy surrounds them completely, leaving no escape and no way out. When the intensity of thirst overwhelms them and they cry out for relief, they will be given water like molten metal—dark, filthy, and boiling—that sears their faces upon contact. What a terrible drink! It neither quenches thirst nor brings comfort; rather, it intensifies their agony. And how evil is that Fire as a resting place and a dwelling!
This verse carries a profound message of mercy and justice. The truth is presented clearly, and every human being is given the freedom to choose—but with that freedom comes accountability. Allah does not force anyone into belief, for faith that is coerced holds no value. Yet He warns with love, so that no one can say on the Day of Judgment, "We were not informed." The door of repentance remains open, and the mercy of Allah is vast for those who turn back to Him. Let this be a call to reflect: the temporary pleasures of this world are nothing compared to the eternal bliss of Paradise, just as the fleeting desires of sin are nothing compared to the everlasting torment of Hell. Choose wisely, for your choice today shapes your eternity tomorrow.
