Explanation of the Verse:
As for the wall that I repaired and straightened for you, O Moses — the one whose leaning stones you objected to me fixing — it belonged to two young orphan boys living in that city. Beneath that wall lay a treasure buried for them, a wealth that was rightfully theirs. Their father had been a righteous man, and because of his righteousness, Allah preserved his children and their inheritance.
Your Lord willed that these two boys should grow up in safety, reach their full strength and maturity, and then — at the right time — extract their treasure themselves. This was an act of mercy from your Lord toward them, protecting their wealth from being lost or seized before they were old enough to claim it. Had the wall collapsed, the treasure would have been exposed and taken away, and the orphans would have lost what was rightfully theirs.
And I did not do any of these things — the damaging of the ship, the killing of the boy, or the repairing of the wall — of my own accord or by my own choice. Rather, I acted by the command of Allah and His divine inspiration. This, O Moses, is the true interpretation and explanation of the matters you could not bear patiently, and about which you questioned me in haste.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. Notice how Allah protected two orphan boys because of the righteousness of their father — a father who had already passed away. This teaches us that the legacy of a righteous person does not end with their death; their good deeds continue to shield their loved ones. What a beautiful motivation to strive for righteousness in our own lives, knowing that our devotion to Allah can be a source of protection for our children and grandchildren after us!
Also reflect on the wisdom of Allah’s plan. What seemed like a strange and even objectionable action — repairing a wall for strangers — was in fact a divine arrangement to preserve the rights of the weak and vulnerable. How often do we look at events in our lives and see only confusion, when in reality Allah is weaving a perfect plan for us? Trust in Allah’s wisdom, be patient with His decree, and know that every difficulty carries within it a hidden mercy.
Finally, the story of Al-Khidr and Moses teaches us humility. Even a great prophet like Moses was shown that there are divine wisdoms beyond human understanding. So, as believers, let us submit wholeheartedly to Allah’s commands, knowing that His knowledge encompasses all things, and His mercy precedes His judgment. May Allah make us among those who are patient, grateful, and trusting in His perfect plan.
