Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Dhul-Qarnayn (ذِي الْقَرْنَيْنِ): Literally meaning "the one with two horns" or "the possessor of two eras/regions." It refers to a righteous king and servant of Allah who was given great power, knowledge, and dominion over vast lands. The name is attributed to him either because of two braids of hair on his head, or because he reached the two ends (east and west) of the earth.
- Atlu (أَتْلُو): To recite, narrate, or convey in a clear and detailed manner.
- Dhikr (ذِكْرًا): A reminder, an account, or a narration that carries lessons, wisdom, and admonition for those who hear it.
The Interpretation:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding a question posed by the disbelievers of Quraysh and the Jews, who were testing him. They asked about the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous and powerful king whom Allah had granted immense knowledge, wisdom, and authority over the earth. He was called "Dhul-Qarnayn" because he reached the two extremes of the earth—the east and the west—or due to two distinctive braids of hair he had.
Allah instructs His Prophet to respond to them with grace and confidence: "Say: I will recite to you from his story a remembrance." This means: I will narrate to you a portion of his account that is full of profound lessons, so that you may reflect, learn, and be admonished. The response is not a detailed biography but a selective, purposeful narration that highlights the signs of Allah’s power, the justice of a righteous ruler, and the ultimate accountability of all nations.
The verse carries a beautiful invitation to the truth: instead of engaging in futile debate or speculation, the Prophet is commanded to present the story as a reminder—a means to awaken hearts and minds to the greatness of Allah, who grants power to whom He wills and takes it away from whom He wills. It teaches us that true leadership is not about pride or domination, but about humility, justice, and service to Allah’s creation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder how Allah Himself chose to answer this question through revelation. He did not simply give a name or a date; He gave a story that inspires faith, courage, and hope. When people ask you about Islam, about the Qur'an, or about the unseen, respond with wisdom and a beautiful reminder—just as the Prophet was commanded here. Let every answer you give be a dhikr, a reminder that draws hearts closer to Allah, strengthens their trust in His wisdom, and encourages them to live with purpose and righteousness. The story of Dhul-Qarnayn is not just history; it is a living lesson that Allah is the King of all kings, and He alone deserves our worship and obedience. So, open your heart to this divine narrative, and let it transform your vision of power, success, and leadership in this world and the Hereafter.
