📖 English Meaning
There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord [during Hajj]. But when you depart from 'Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash'ar al-Haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Junāh (جُنَاح): Sin, blame, or burden.
  • Tabtaghū (تَبْتَغُوا): To seek or pursue.
  • Faḍlan (فَضْلًا): Bounty, provision, or grace—here referring to lawful profit through trade.
  • Afaḍtum (أَفَضْتُم): You have departed or poured forth (from a place) in a large group.
  • ʿArafāt (عَرَفَات): The plain near Mecca where pilgrims stand on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah.
  • Al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām (الْمَشْعَرِ الْحَرَامِ): The sacred monument—referring to Muzdalifah, the area between ʿArafāt and Minā.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse brings a beautiful and practical mercy from Allah to His servants. It begins by removing any guilt or hesitation the believers might feel about engaging in lawful trade and seeking provision from their Lord during the days of Hajj. Some companions, out of excessive caution, had refrained from buying and selling during the pilgrimage, thinking it might diminish the spiritual purity of the journey. Allah, in His infinite kindness, clarifies that there is no sin in seeking His bounty through lawful commerce during these blessed days. This teaches us that Islam does not separate the sacred from the worldly—rather, it purifies our daily pursuits and elevates them into acts of worship when done with sincerity and within His boundaries.

Then, the verse guides the pilgrim to a profound moment of remembrance. After the great standing at ʿArafāt on the 9th day, when the sun has set and the crowds begin to move toward Muzdalifah, Allah commands: "When you depart from ʿArafāt, remember Allah at the Sacred Monument." This is a call to fill the night with dhikr—glorifying Him, proclaiming His oneness (tahlīl), supplicating with humility, and raising the voice in talbiyah (Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik). The remembrance here is not merely a ritual; it is a heartfelt acknowledgment of Allah’s guidance, mercy, and grace.

The verse concludes with a profound reminder of Allah’s favor: "And remember Him as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before this among the astray." This is a gentle yet powerful nudge to gratitude. Before Islam, the Arabs were lost in ignorance—worshipping idols, burying daughters alive, and living without moral compass or divine direction. Then Allah, out of His sheer mercy, guided them to the light of faith and taught them the rites of His Sacred House. This remembrance is therefore not just words on the tongue, but a deep awareness of the transformation Allah has wrought in their lives—from darkness to light, from misguidance to guidance.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse carries a timeless message for all of us. It tells you that your religion is not a burden that strips you of the blessings of this world. You can seek provision, work, and trade—even during the most sacred moments—as long as your heart remains connected to Allah. And it reminds you that the greatest gift you possess is the gift of guidance. Before you knew Islam, you were wandering in the darkness of confusion and error. Allah chose you, honored you, and showed you the way. So let your remembrance of Him be filled with gratitude, your worship with love, and your life with the beautiful balance He has prescribed. This is the path of the guided ones—and it is open to you, right now, wherever you are.

📜 Verse 196-200 — Al-Baqarah

And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do - Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding.
There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord [during Hajj]. But when you depart from 'Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash'ar al-Haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.
Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter no share.
