Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a beautiful and compassionate principle in Islamic law: divorced women are entitled to a provision — a gift or maintenance — given in a kind and honorable manner. This is not merely a recommendation for the generous; it is a confirmed right upon those who truly fear Allah and are conscious of Him in all their affairs.
The provision may take the form of clothing, money, or any suitable gift that serves to comfort the woman’s heart and soften the pain of separation. It is given according to the husband’s financial capacity — whether he is wealthy or of modest means — and in a way that is fair, dignified, and respectful. The goal is not to humiliate or belittle, but to honor the woman who has been through the difficulty of divorce, to acknowledge the bond that once existed, and to close that chapter with grace and nobility.
This verse teaches us that even in the ending of a marriage, Islam calls for excellence in character. The divorcee is not to be left empty-handed or broken-hearted without any recognition of her worth. Rather, she is to be treated with kindness, generosity, and respect — a reflection of the high moral standard that Islam sets for all human interactions.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, see how the Qur’an elevates the status of women and protects their dignity even in the most sensitive of situations! This is the beauty of Islam — a religion that does not leave hearts wounded without a balm, nor relationships severed without a gesture of goodwill. Allah, the Most Merciful, has made this provision a right upon the God-fearing, reminding us that true piety is not merely in prayer and fasting, but in how we treat one another with fairness and compassion.
So let this verse inspire you: in every relationship, in every parting, and in every moment of difficulty, strive to be among the muttaqīn — those who honour the rights of others, who give generously, and who leave a legacy of kindness. For when you treat others with excellence, you are not only fulfilling a duty, but you are drawing closer to the pleasure of Allah, who loves those who do good. And know that every act of kindness, no matter how small, is witnessed by Allah and will be rewarded beyond your imagination.
