Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 255

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse, known as Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse), is the greatest verse in the entire Quran, and it encapsulates the very essence of Islamic monotheism. It begins by declaring the most fundamental truth of existence: "Allah — there is no deity worthy of worship except Him." This is not merely a statement of belief; it is an invitation to free your heart from every false object of devotion — whether it be wealth, status, desires, or created beings — and to direct your worship, love, and hope exclusively to the One who truly deserves it.

Allah describes Himself as Al-Hayy — the Ever-Living — whose life is absolute and perfect, with no beginning, no end, and no deficiency. And He is Al-Qayyum — the Self-Sustaining — who manages the affairs of every single creature in existence. He does not need anyone or anything, yet every atom in the universe depends on Him for its very existence and continued survival. This is why the verse immediately adds: "Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep." Unlike human rulers and caretakers who grow tired and must rest, Allah's watchfulness over His creation is constant, perfect, and effortless. He is always awake, always aware, always in control.

The verse then proclaims His absolute ownership: "To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth." Everything — from the smallest particle to the greatest galaxy — is His property, His creation, and under His command. Nothing exists outside His dominion.

Then comes a powerful statement about intercession: "Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" On the Day of Judgment, even the greatest prophets and angels will not dare to speak a word on behalf of anyone without Allah's explicit permission. This teaches us profound humility — no one has any inherent right or power to save us; all hope rests solely on Allah's mercy and His gracious permission. This should drive every believer to turn directly to Allah in supplication, while also maintaining hope in His infinite mercy.

Allah then reveals the vastness of His knowledge: "He knows what is before them and what will be after them." He knows the past, the present, and the future — every thought that has crossed your mind, every deed you have done, and everything that will happen until the end of time. Yet despite this infinite knowledge, "they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills." The entire combined intellect of all humans and jinn throughout history is but a drop in the ocean compared to Allah's knowledge. Whatever knowledge we possess — whether in science, medicine, or technology — is merely a gift from Allah, who reveals to us only a tiny fraction of what He knows. This should fill us with humility and gratitude.

Finally, the verse describes the grandeur of Allah's creation: "His Kursiyy extends over the heavens and the earth." This Footstool encompasses the entire universe in its vastness — a universe so immense that it staggers the human imagination. Yet, "their preservation tires Him not." Maintaining billions of galaxies, countless stars, and every living creature does not burden Allah in the slightest. Just as it costs Him no effort to create, it costs Him no effort to sustain.

The verse concludes with two magnificent names: "And He is the Most High, the Most Great." He is exalted above all His creation in His essence, His attributes, and His authority. Nothing resembles Him, nothing escapes Him, and nothing is greater than Him.
