Word Meanings:
- Ar-Riba (الربا): The increase or excess over the principal amount in a loan or debt transaction, which Islam has strictly prohibited.
- Yatakhabbatuhu (يَتَخَبَّطُهُ): To be struck with madness or insanity, causing one to lose balance and fall.
- Al-Mass (المَسِّ): Touching or affliction, referring here to the touch of Satan that causes madness or epilepsy.
- Ma Salaf (مَا سَلَفَ): What has passed or occurred previously, before the prohibition reached the person.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses one of the most severe financial sins in Islam: dealing in usury or interest (riba). Allah describes the state of those who consume riba on the Day of Resurrection in a striking and terrifying manner—they will rise from their graves like a person afflicted with madness, staggering and falling, unable to stand upright. This is the very image of instability and loss of control, reflecting the spiritual and moral corruption that riba brings into a person's life.
The reason for this punishment is that these people dared to equate riba with lawful trade, saying: "Trade is just like riba—both increase one's wealth, so why should one be allowed and the other forbidden?" They made a false analogy, measuring the sacred law of Allah by their own flawed reasoning. Allah refutes their claim decisively: "But Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba." This is a clear, definitive ruling that leaves no room for argument. The difference between the two is profound: trade involves mutual benefit, fair exchange, and real value, while riba involves exploitation, oppression, and the unjust consumption of others' wealth without any rightful compensation.
Then comes a door of mercy for those who have fallen into this sin. Allah says: "So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists—he may keep what has already passed, and his affair rests with Allah." This means that if a person learns of the prohibition and sincerely stops dealing in riba, repenting to Allah, then whatever riba they took before the prohibition reached them is forgiven, and their future is left to Allah's mercy and guidance. This is a beautiful demonstration of Allah's compassion—He does not punish the ignorant who repent, and He opens the door of forgiveness wide.
But for those who return to riba after the clear warning has reached them, knowing it is forbidden yet persisting in it, the verse concludes with a stern warning: "But whoever returns [to it]—those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally." This eternal punishment applies to those who consume riba while believing it to be lawful, or as a prolonged stay in Hell for those who persist in it without repentance. The severity of this warning should make every believer pause and reflect on the gravity of this sin.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on how Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made trade lawful for you—a means of earning sustenance with dignity, fairness, and mutual benefit. Trade builds communities, strengthens bonds, and brings provision through honest effort. But riba destroys individuals and societies; it creates a cycle of debt and dependency, widening the gap between rich and poor, and breeding resentment and injustice.
Allah has not forbidden riba to burden you, but to protect you. He knows what is best for His creation, for He is the All-Wise and All-Knowing. When you abstain from riba, you are not losing anything—rather, you are gaining the pleasure of Allah, the purity of your wealth, and the blessing of His provision. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah destroys riba and gives increase for charities" (Al-Baqarah 2:276). Trust in Allah's promise, and know that what He has decreed for you is far better than what you might gain through forbidden means.
If you have been involved in riba, do not despair. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Turn back to Him sincerely, clear your affairs of interest, and seek lawful earnings. Allah loves those who purify their wealth and their hearts. And if you have never dealt with riba, praise Allah for His guidance and be vigilant, for the temptations of this world are many. Teach others, advise your family and friends, and be a beacon of righteousness in your community.
May Allah protect us all from the trials of wealth and grant us provision that is pure and blessed. Ameen.
