Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yamhaqu (يَمْحَقُ): To destroy, diminish, or erase entirely — removing all blessing and benefit.
- Ar-Riba (الرِّبَا): Usury/interest — any excess or increase in wealth gained through exploitative financial transactions prohibited by Allah.
- Yurbi (يُرْبِي): To increase, multiply, and cause to grow abundantly.
- As-Sadaqat (الصَّدَقَاتُ): Charitable giving — voluntary alms and acts of kindness given sincerely for Allah's sake.
- Kaffar (كَفَّار): One who is persistently and obstinately ungrateful, repeatedly rejecting the truth.
- Athim (أَثِيم): One who is deeply entrenched in sin, persistently committing transgressions without remorse.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, declares that He erases and destroys the wealth gained through riba (usury/interest). This destruction may manifest in two ways: either the wealth itself is physically lost or wasted, or — even if it remains in the owner's hands — its blessing (barakah) is completely stripped away, leaving it void of any goodness, peace, or lasting benefit. The person who consumes riba may see their money grow numerically, but they will find no true contentment, no security, and no divine protection in it. It becomes a source of anxiety, discord, and ultimately loss.
In stark contrast, Allah multiplies and increases the wealth of those who give sadaqat (charity). He pours His blessings upon their provisions, and He multiplies their rewards in the Hereafter in ways beyond human comprehension — a single good deed is rewarded with ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, and even more for those whom Allah wills to honor generously. The giver of charity does not lose anything; rather, they gain in both this world and the next. Their wealth is purified, their heart is enriched, and their standing before Allah is elevated.
Then Allah makes a profound declaration: "And Allah does not love every persistent disbeliever, deeply sinful." This describes the one who stubbornly rejects Allah's commandments, who dares to deem the forbidden as permissible, and who persists in sin without repentance. Such a person — who consumes riba while knowing it is prohibited, who continues in disobedience while claiming faith — places themselves outside the love of Allah. And when Allah does not love a servant, that servant is left to their own devices, deprived of divine guidance, protection, and ultimate success.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this divine contrast! Allah does not merely prohibit riba — He actively works against it, destroying it at its very roots. Yet for charity, He takes it upon Himself to nurture it, grow it, and bless it beyond measure. This is not a matter of worldly arithmetic; it is a matter of divine decree. The wealth that seems to grow through interest is actually decaying from within, while the wealth that decreases through giving is actually multiplying in ways unseen.
So why would any intelligent person choose a path that Allah Himself destroys, over a path that Allah Himself nurtures? Open your heart to the beauty of giving. When you spend in charity, you are not losing — you are investing with the One who never breaks His promise. Your wealth becomes purified, your soul becomes tranquil, and your future becomes secure. And above all, you earn the love of your Creator — the greatest treasure that no amount of worldly riches can ever compare to.
Let this verse be a turning point. Abandon what Allah has forbidden, embrace what He has commanded, and taste the sweetness of a life lived under His pleasure and protection.
