Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Labbus (لَبُوس): This refers to anything worn for protection, specifically here meaning coats of mail (armor).
  • Li tuhsinakum (لِتُحْصِنَكُم): So that it may protect you and keep you safe.
  • Min ba'sikum (مِن بَأْسِكُمْ): From your own violence and the harm of warfare — i.e., from the weapons and strikes of your enemies in battle.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of a great favor He bestowed upon His Prophet Dawud (David, peace be upon him) and upon humanity through him. Allah says: "And We taught him the making of coats of mail for you, to protect you from your own violence." This means that Allah, out of His wisdom and mercy, taught Prophet Dawud the craft of forging iron into interlocking rings to create flexible armor — a garment that could be worn in battle without restricting movement. This armor shielded warriors from the deadly blows of swords, spears, and arrows, preserving their lives in combat.

The verse emphasizes that this was not a human invention but a divine teaching — Allah Himself instructed Dawud in this art, as a blessing for all people. The phrase "to protect you from your own violence" highlights that warfare and its dangers are part of human existence, and Allah, in His mercy, provided the means to reduce the harm and loss of life.

Then Allah poses a profound question: "So, are you grateful?" This is a gentle yet powerful call to reflect: when you see the armor, the protection, the safety it brings, do you recognize the Hand of Allah behind it? Do you thank Him for this blessing? Gratitude here is not merely with the tongue but by using these blessings in obedience to Allah and for the good of humanity.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

This verse invites us to open our eyes to the countless blessings that surround us — many of which we take for granted. The ability to craft, to innovate, to protect ourselves and our communities — all of this comes from Allah's grace. He taught a prophet a skill, and that skill became a means of saving lives for generations to come.

Imagine the mercy of a Lord who does not leave His servants helpless in the face of danger, but guides them to tools and knowledge that preserve life and dignity. This is the same Lord who sent His prophets, revealed His books, and opened the doors of guidance to every human being.

So, the question echoes through time: Are you grateful? Gratitude is not just a word — it is a way of life. It is recognizing the Giver behind every gift, using every blessing in ways that please Him, and drawing closer to Him through reflection and obedience. When you thank Allah for His favors, He promises to increase you — in guidance, in provision, and in peace.

Let this verse be a reminder that every skill you possess, every protection you enjoy, and every comfort you experience is a thread in the vast tapestry of Allah's mercy. So, turn to Him with a grateful heart, and let your gratitude manifest in your actions — for He is the One who deserves all praise, and His blessings are beyond count.

📜 Verse 78-82 — Al-Anbiya

And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field - when the sheep of a people overran it [at night], and We were witness to their judgement.
And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us], along with David and [also] the birds. And We were doing [that].
And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We are ever, of all things, Knowing.
And of the devils were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian.
