Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance! Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, teaches you a beautiful etiquette that protects the sanctity of the home and the dignity of the family. He commands that your servants — those whom your right hands possess — and the children among you who have not yet reached puberty must seek your permission before entering upon you at three specific times of the day.
These three times are: before the dawn (Fajr) prayer — when you are rising from sleep and changing from night clothes to day clothes; at midday (al-zaheerah) — when you take off your garments for the afternoon rest; and after the night ('Isha) prayer — when you prepare for sleep and remove your day clothes. These are three times of privacy for you, when a person is naturally in a state of undress and the body is less covered. At these moments, no one — neither servant nor child — should enter upon you without seeking permission first.
However, Allah, in His great kindness, makes it clear that outside these three times, there is no sin upon you or upon them if they enter without asking permission. Why? Because they are constantly moving around you — servants attending to your needs, children playing and coming and going — and it would be an immense hardship for them to seek permission at every single moment. The religion of Islam is one of ease, not difficulty. So Allah grants this concession out of His mercy, while still preserving the sacred boundaries of privacy at the times when it matters most.
This is how Allah makes His signs and rulings clear to you — step by step, with wisdom and compassion. He knows exactly what is beneficial for His servants, and He is All-Wise in everything He legislates. Nothing in His law is arbitrary; every command carries within it a profound mercy and a protection for the human soul.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, see how beautifully Islam honours your dignity and your family life! Even in the smallest details of daily living — when you wake, when you rest, when you sleep — your Lord has placed a protective shield around you. This is not a burden; it is a gift. It teaches your children and your servants respect and modesty from a young age, and it instils in your home an atmosphere of purity and honour.
And notice the balance: Islam is not rigid. It does not demand the impossible. When there is genuine need — as with servants who must serve and children who must move about — the door of ease is opened wide. This is the beauty of our Deen: it combines discipline with compassion, structure with flexibility, and modesty with practicality.
So take these teachings to heart, implement them with love, and teach your household this noble etiquette. For in every command of Allah, there is a treasure of goodness — and the one who follows it is the one who truly succeeds in this life and the next. May Allah make us among those who hear His words and obey them with sincerity and joy.
