Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a beautiful and profound portrait of the true servants of the Most Merciful. These are people whose hearts are pure and whose actions are upright, and Allah describes them with the most noble of characteristics.
First, they do not call upon any other deity alongside Allah. Their worship, their prayers, their hopes, and their fears are directed solely to the One who created them. They have purified their faith from the filth of shirk (associating partners with Allah), knowing that only Allah deserves their devotion.
Second, they do not take a life that Allah has made sacred, except through the due process of justice. They do not kill out of anger, revenge, or aggression. They recognize the sanctity of human life and only support taking a life when the law of Allah clearly permits it—such as in the case of a murderer facing just retribution, or an apostate who has turned away from the faith after clear proof, or a married person who commits adultery and faces the prescribed punishment. This shows their deep respect for justice and order.
Third, they do not commit zina (adultery or fornication). They guard their chastity and control their desires, keeping them within the pure and lawful bounds of marriage or what is rightfully theirs. They do not follow the corrupt ways of those who treat their bodies and relationships as mere playthings.
Then Allah issues a powerful warning: "And whoever does that will meet a severe punishment." This means that anyone who commits any of these major sins—shirk, unjust killing, or zina—without sincere repentance will face a terrible consequence in the Hereafter. The punishment will be doubled for them on the Day of Resurrection, and they will remain in it humiliated and disgraced.
But here is the beauty of Islam and the mercy of Allah: this severe warning is immediately followed by an open door of hope. Allah says that except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds. For such people, Allah will transform their evil deeds into good deeds, and He will forgive them completely. Indeed, Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. He calls His servants to repentance even after they have committed the gravest of sins, because He loves to forgive and He delights in the return of His servant to Him.
So, dear reader, this verse is a call to you. It tells you that the path of faith is one of purity and discipline, but it also tells you that no matter how far you have fallen, the door of repentance is always open. Do not despair of Allah's mercy. Turn back to Him sincerely, and He will wipe away your sins and replace them with good deeds. This is the promise of the One who is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. Embrace this beautiful faith, and let it transform your heart and your life.
