Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُضَاعَفْ (Yuda'af): Will be multiplied and doubled.
- الْعَذَابُ (Al-'Adhab): The torment and punishment.
- يَخْلُدْ (Yakhlud): Will remain forever and eternally.
- مُهَانًا (Muhanan): In a state of humiliation, disgrace, and utter degradation.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the fate of those who commit the major sins mentioned in the preceding verses — namely, associating partners with Allah (shirk), taking a life unjustly, and committing adultery or fornication. For such people, Allah declares that their punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be multiplied and intensified — not merely a single punishment, but one that is compounded and repeated in severity. They will not find any relief or respite from it.
Furthermore, they will remain in that torment eternally, and their state will be one of humiliation and disgrace. They will be stripped of all dignity, lowered in status, and treated with utter contempt. This is not a punishment of mere physical pain, but one that combines physical suffering with profound psychological and spiritual degradation — being cast away from Allah's mercy and left in a state of abject worthlessness.
This verse serves as a severe warning against these cardinal sins, emphasizing that the consequences are not temporary but everlasting. The doubling of the punishment reflects the gravity of the crimes — sins that violate the rights of Allah (shirk), the rights of others (murder), and the sanctity of family and lineage (adultery). Each of these carries immense weight, and their combination or repetition only increases the severity of the divine justice.
A Call to Reflection and Repentance:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the reality of the Hereafter. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not inform us of these punishments to frighten us into despair, but to guide us away from destruction and toward salvation. The very next verses in this blessed chapter open the door of hope — for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds, Allah transforms their evil deeds into good ones, for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
This is the beauty of Islam: no matter how far one has fallen, the door of repentance is always open. The same Allah who warns of multiplied punishment is the One who says, "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So hasten to His mercy, turn back to Him sincerely, and let the fear of this verse drive you to the embrace of His forgiveness. For the believer who repents, the punishment is replaced with reward, and humiliation is replaced with honor in the gardens of eternal bliss.
