Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, miracle, or portent that serves as undeniable evidence.
  • Aʿnāquhum (أَعْنَاقُهُمْ): Their necks; metaphorically refers to their entire beings, heads, and postures in submission.
  • Khāḍiʿīn (خَاضِعِينَ): Humbled, submissive, and obedient, with complete surrender.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah addresses the stubbornness of the disbelievers who persistently rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) despite the clear signs of the Qur’an. Allah declares that if He willed, He could send down from the heavens a single, overwhelming miracle—a visible, terrifying sign—that would force every single one of them into submission. Their necks would bow in humility, their pride would shatter, and they would have no choice but to believe. Yet, Allah does not do this, and the reason is profound: faith that is compelled by force is not true faith. The faith that carries weight and merit is the faith that arises from the heart, freely chosen, through reflection on the signs of Allah in the universe and in His revelation. Allah leaves the door open for them to believe by their own will, so that their belief is genuine and rewarded, not coerced and meaningless.

This verse is a powerful reminder of Allah’s absolute power and His infinite wisdom. He could have forced humanity to submit, but He chose to give us free will, so that our worship and belief are acts of love and choice, not compulsion. It also serves as a gentle warning: if they persist in rejection, the punishment in the Hereafter will be far greater than any temporary miracle they might have witnessed in this world. For the believer, this verse instills awe of Allah’s might and gratitude for His mercy in giving us the opportunity to choose Him willingly. It also calls us to reflect: how often do we bow our necks in humility to our Creator in prayer and obedience, not out of fear of a forced sign, but out of love and certainty? Let this be a motivation to strengthen our faith, for the Qur’an itself is the greatest miracle—an eternal sign that invites us to submit with open hearts, not shackled necks.

📜 Verse 2-6 — Ash-Shu'ara

These are the verses of the clear Book.
Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.
If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.
And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
