Key Words and Phrases:

  • Dhikr (ذِكْر): A reminder, admonition, or message. Here, it refers to the Qur'an itself, which serves as a divine reminder of Allah's rights upon His servants, His signs, and the truth of the Prophet's message.
  • Muḥdath (مُحْدَث): Newly revealed or renewed. This describes the Qur'an as being sent down in stages, part by part, so that each new revelation is a fresh, ongoing reminder.
  • Muʿriḍīn (مُعْرِضِينَ): Turning away, shunning, or averting oneself with deliberate disregard and aversion.

The Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a sorrowful picture of the disbelievers' attitude toward divine guidance. It tells us that no fresh reminder from the Most Merciful (Ar-Raḥmān) reaches them—whether it be a new verse of the Qur'an, a new admonition, or a new proof clarifying the truth of monotheism and the sincerity of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—except that they turn away from it in stubborn refusal.

The word "Muḥdath" (newly revealed) is significant here. It highlights the continuous mercy of Allah: He does not leave His servants without guidance. Rather, He sends down His revelation piece by piece, addressing new situations, answering new questions, and renewing the call to truth. Each new revelation is an act of divine compassion, a fresh opportunity for hearts to open and minds to reflect. Yet, despite this relentless mercy, the disbelievers respond with the same attitude every time: they hear it, and they deliberately turn their backs on it. They do not merely ignore it; they actively shun it, refusing to listen, reflect, or accept.

This verse is a profound lesson in the nature of divine mercy versus human obstinacy. The Most Merciful keeps sending reminders, hoping for their return, while they keep turning away, hardening their hearts with each passing revelation. It is a warning that persistence in rejection is not a sign of strength, but of self-harm—for every time they turn away, they distance themselves further from the very light that could save them.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and ponder the beauty of this verse. It shows you a Lord who never gives up on His creation. Even when people are stubborn, He continues to send reminders—through the Qur'an, through the changing seasons, through the events of life, and through the voice of truth that reaches your ears. Every verse you hear today is a fresh call from Ar-Raḥmān, the Most Merciful, inviting you to come closer to Him.

Do not be like those who turn away. Instead, be among those who respond. When you hear a verse of the Qur'an, let it soften your heart. When you encounter a reminder of Allah, let it renew your faith. The door of mercy is wide open, and the reminders keep coming—but the question is: will you be present to receive them, or will you walk away?

This is your moment. Open your heart, listen with sincerity, and let the words of the Most Merciful transform your life. For He who sends the reminder is the One who loves you most, and He never ceases to call you back to Him.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Ash-Shu'ara

Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.
If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.
And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?
